The Northern Elephant Seal was declared extinct in 1884 due to over-hunting by humans. Fortunately a few hundred animals survived. Mexico was the first to make the species officially protected in 1922, and the US followed a few years later. Since then the species have rebounded to at least 110,000 mature individuals and has been accessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
