JBWC Young Writers Get Pinteresque with Torn Space Theater
Marisa Caruso of Torn Space Theater came to the JBWC recently to teach our young writers all about playwright Harold Pinter. Exploring everything Pinteresque, students watched segments of Pinter’s The Birthday Party and The Collection and wrote scenes without dialogue.
A Scene Without Dialogue: By Hannah
The gardener does a handstand for ten seconds.
They kneel on the ground.
Enter three people, moving in circles around the gardener.
All three step back and sit on their hands.
The gardener re-enters their handstand.
A Scene Without Dialogue: By Ikuris
Lorde sits quietly on the blood-stained mattress.
She looks down at the bodies below, staring in complete apathy.
(Silence for 90 seconds.)
She glances at her arm, scratched and bloody.
Slowly, she gets up, picks up the dead rat, and leads her cat to the kitchen.
For the final day of the workshop, JBWC writers were invited to the dress rehearsal of Torn Space’s riveting production of Pinter’s The Collection and given the opportunity to take part in a brief talk-back with the cast, director, and crew! We are so grateful to Torn Space for providing our students with this awesome experience!
