Thread Worm: Enterobius vermicularis

Sometimes known as Pinworm, commonly found in children. Infection is asymptomatic in 90%, but may cause perianal itching particularly at night, girls may present with vulval symptoms. 

Usually treated empirically, entire family single dose anti-helminthic agent e.g. mebendazole and hygiene advice.

The pinworm is a parasite that thrives in the human intestine and is common worldwide, mostly in children. Adult pinworms are white and only half an inch long. Their eggs are microscopic and impossible to see with the naked eye. While not fatal to humans, the lifecycle of this worm is truly disgusting. Once in the human colon, the females lay eggs around the infected person’s anus, causing immense itching. Children rarely wash their hands after scratching personal body parts, thus most commonly spreading the eggs and allowing the pinworm to continue reproducing in others. Pinworms are highly contagious; they are the most common worm infection in the United States.
