"Matri du Mari", is the title, in Sicilian, of this illustration. It means "Mother of the Sea", and features Scylla, the oldest (and biggest) pistrix, meeting a... young child, that definitely shouldn't be there, under the waves.

What is happening? Why? This is a thing that you decide.

There are many ways this could be interpreted, and we wanted it to be open to the viewer imagination.

(This ballpoint pen illustration was created specifically for an art show, and we love to challenge a bit the viewer, especially given the themes of the show... that we won't say here, shh! ;)).

Jonah thrown overboard and swallowed by a sea monster. Mosaic, IV century CE, basilica of Aquileia, Udine, Italy.

The pavement of the Aquileia basilica is the oldest Christian mosaic. It is also the largest Western mosaic (ca. 750 m²).

The sea monster looks like an oarfish, which actually is not a threat to humans because it only feeds on fish, molluscs and crustaceans. Oarfish is a vagrant species in the Mediterranean Sea and it is rarely observed in that environment.
