Oarfish, King of the Herrings
Art Nouveau vase by Stephanie Young of Calmwater Designs
Some Manga colourings I did a while ago!! I actually wanted to do more before posting them but hey. They're already much for a single post so yeh.
Regalex is such a cool character I really really really like her A LOT. She's probably my favourite character in the whole Manga! :3
I really like her view on humans.
Character : Regalecus / Regalex
Manga : Yumekui Merry / Merry Nightmare
Please DO NOT repost my colourings without my permission.
✧ ・゚.* Our beloved ruler of this mortal realm Aqua Regalecus. The most precious water serpent king who is at least 75% scarf and really wants you to do well in everything you’re passionate in. *:・゚✧
Jonah thrown overboard and swallowed by a sea monster. Mosaic, IV century CE, basilica of Aquileia, Udine, Italy.
The pavement of the Aquileia basilica is the oldest Christian mosaic. It is also the largest Western mosaic (ca. 750 m²).
The sea monster looks like an oarfish, which actually is not a threat to humans because it only feeds on fish, molluscs and crustaceans. Oarfish is a vagrant species in the Mediterranean Sea and it is rarely observed in that environment.
“Sea monster” :Leviathan (Hebrew “whale”), πρίστις (Greek “sawfish”) > pistrix (Latin) > pistrice (Italian)
Giant Oarfish (Regalecus glesne)
The photograph was taken in 1996 and shows a giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne) found on the shore of the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California. This extremely rare specimen was 23 ft (7.0 m) long and weighed 300 lb (140 kg). The original photograph can be seen on page 20 of the April 1997 issue of All Hands.
The main feature of the oarfish is its length: it can reach a length of 11 meters, although normally does not exceed 3, and the weight can reach some hundreds of kilograms. In February 2010 a bathyscaphe in the Gulf of Mexico has seen a specimen at a depth of 1500 meters whose length is roughly estimated to be over 17 meters.
R. glesne is the world's longest bony fish. Its shape is ribbon-like, narrow laterally, with a dorsal fin along its entire length, stubby pectoral fins, and long, oar-shaped pelvic fins, from which its common name is derived. Its coloration is silvery with dark markings, and its fins are red. Its physical characteristics and its undulating mode of swimming have led to speculation that it might be the source of many "sea serpent / monster" sightings.

Rare footage of creatures from the deep from @deepsixholiday Check her out ⬇️ . Two years ago in the Sea of Cortez, I watched two 15' long Giant Oarfish swim to the waters edge near my feet and beach themselves. Of all the encounters I've had in nature with wild animals, this one was the most surreal. With their enormous size, fantastic, iridescent blue skin, and vibrant red dorsal fins they were the most surprising and beautiful animals I had ever seen. Those of us on the beach repeatedly pushed the fish back into the water, only to have them beach themselves again. Despite our efforts, eventually the birds descended and finished the job. These deep sea creatures, like others we know little about, were a source of sea serpent lore, and I was so very humbled by the experience.
