SHE’S SO CUTE I’M GONNA DIE
Tamberlane Webcomic
So I had the pleasure of reading (bingeing) a WebComic called Tamberlane over the weekend. I had heard about it and seen a few pages here and there in different places, but never read the entire thing (it is still ongoing). Well, I was really missing out! Now, I have been in the furry fandom a very long time so I am used to cute; however this is top tier weapons grade next level adorable! It follows the life of a clumsy but lovable bat named Belfry who finds a human child named Tamberlane abandoned in the woods. Belfry decides to care for the child as her adopted Mother. The setting is the town of Treehollow inhabited by various species of anthropomorphic animals which have absolutely no idea what a Human (Tamberlane) is or where they come from. From the outside looking in it seems like a very progressive and happy, perfect little town. Virtually all of the townsfolk treat little Tamberlane so nicely, especially the younger kids, despite having never seen anything like her before. There is even a language barrier on top of it all because Tamberlane can only verbally speak a few simple words but knowing more than a few in a type of sign language. (which much of the town also cannot understand) Watching it all play out makes me a little sad honestly, I keep thinking to myself why cant real life be more like that...where everyone is just naturally nice and accepting of one another focusing more on the similarities we all have instead of the differences. There is healthy gay and transgender representation in the comic, all of which is so accepted in the town it isn’t even mentioned. Often times in comics or any kind of entertainment really where there is LGBT representation, the storyteller will go out of their way to identify them for “what” they instead of “who” they are. Sorry, I will stop there and simply say this comic handles it very well in my opinion. I have trouble classifying this comic into a category such as Fantasy, or Slice of Life, etc. because honestly I have never read something like this before. It isn’t about some grand adventure, or some legend now being fulfilled, and though it has made me chuckle a few times it isn’t meant to be funny. It is just about what many of us would consider the adventure of a somewhat normal life. There are character conflicts to had of course, but I am excited to see where the story will go. Will Tamberlanes parents show up to try and take her away from Belfry? Will someone show up in the story that knows about Humans? Who knows, and relatively speaking the story seems to be just getting started. You can find the comic here: https://www.tamberlanecomic.com/ and though you can also find this on that site if you are feeling generous you can also find the creators Patreon here: http://www.patreon.com/pixelprism (psst she totally deserves it)
