Connecting the (Celestial) Dots: Pizzaiolo, the Duke of Cheese

Thank you @darkmoorish for handing me the mic 🎤, I’m dying to ramble over here (Also, btw, I’m loving how much Darkmoor love is on tumblr. Huge Ygor fan, over here 💖).

I’ve only been to Pizza Moon twice, but give me non-IP characters and suddenly I need to know everything about them. And there are a TON of characters in Pizza Moon.

Starting with the most boggling, named character, let’s look at Pizzaiolo, the alleged Duke of Cheese.

He can be found in (3?) different places at Pizza Moon:

1) His poster on the outside of the building, naming him and his title:

2) The third screen along the left wall where you wait to be seated. He pops out of a crater and accidentally grates the cheese he’s holding with his flying device:

3) This is the weird one. He might be the guy swinging back and forth if you look up to the right upon entering:

WHO IS THIS GUY???? Because they’re really not the same man. Nicknaming him the “Swinging Duke.”

Though I’m forced to say they are, because all the elements that make him the Duke of Cheese are here:

Mustache

Striped tights and booties

Pizza slice bib

Wooden flying contraption

Holding wedge of cheese

Holding cheese grater

Cape (though one has a red cape, the other green)

So what’s the theory?

I have to go with the Duke in 2/3 places as THE real Duke.

But that said, what’s up with the different Duke designs?

1) Maybe the “real” Duke is a usurper; the Swinging Duke was originally the Duke until this winking one muscled in.

2) or the Swinging Duke is the usurper. Idk it could go either way. He might be inching his way in, moments away from getting those posters replaced with HIS image.

3) Or this is a Star Wars situation. Maybe the Swinging Duke is the decoy—the Amidala decoy that is posing as the real Duke to fool the diners, while the real Duke goofs off in craters.

Do you have any theories? I’m curious to see if his likeness gets streamlined as the park gets older or if they leave this little quirk.

Pizza Rice Bake (Pizzaiola Rice)

Ingredients:

cooking spray

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper

1 1/2 cups uncooked parboiled long-grain white rice

2 1/4 cups vegetable or chicken stock

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 cups marinara sauce, divided

1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

15 pepperoni slices

1 cup shredded low-moisture part-skim mozzarella cheese

torn fresh basil leaves

Instructions:

Gather all Ingredients. Spray an 8-inch broiler-safe baking dish with cooking spray, and set aside.

Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and crushed red pepper and cook, stirring often, until garlic is lightly browned and aromatic, about 1 minute. Add rice, and cook, stirring occasionally until lightly toasted, about 3 minutes.

Stir in stock, salt, pepper, and 1 1/2 cups marinara sauce. Bring to a boil over medium heat, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, covered, stirring every few minutes, until rice is almost fully cooked through, 18 to 20 minutes

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C);

Remove from heat, stir in Parmesan cheese and remaining 1/2 cup marinara, until evenly combined.

Transfer rice mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it into an even layer.

Top evenly with pepperoni and mozzarella.

Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is melted, about 10 minutes. With baking dish still in the oven, increase oven temperature to broil; broil until cheese is just golden brown, 2 to 5 more minutes.

Remove from the oven and garnish with basil.
