Unpopular opinion about Zoe Nightshade
So I decided to read the relevant passages about Heracles and Zoe. And I have some thoughts that are probably going to be unpopular.
First, why does Rick keep using "Hercules" instead of "Heracles"? I guess most people know him by the former name (I did) but it makes the worldbuilding messy as heck when the Romans are introduced. Sloppy writing.
Second, I am totally sick and tired of Percy's dreams. It feels like a cheap, quick tactic for Percy to have intimate knowledge of people without any hard work! Wouldn't it have been so much better if Zoe told Percy the story after he earned her respect? Heck, maybe Zoe told Thalia the story and she confided in Percy. Anything but Percy dreaming that he was Heracles! Lazy writing! The same with Luke. Make Percy have to work to learn about Kronos' plans! Or even do similar with Harry and Voldy where Percy's dreams cause him some sort of spiritual strain. Or maybe it's a power that Percy hones. But Percy having random ass dreams about people is pure nonsense.
Finally, let me talk about Zoe and Heracles. What Heracles did was terrible...but I don't understand why Zoe is being portrayed as a helpless victim. She decided to betray her family for a guy she liked. Even if Heracles gave her credit, what effing difference would it make?! She would have still been disowned but hey at least she would be known in the myths 😁😁😁. Would she have been happy to be cast out if she just got her credit?
Zoe deserves sympathy for her situation with Jerkules and her part in his heroics deserves credit. But Zoe does not seem to take much responsibility for being disowned and blames every bad thing that happened to her on Heracles and then men in general, including innocent boys. Zoe is the type of woman who dates bad boys and then decides all men are trash without taking any accountability for choosing said bad boys. Reminds me a little of the themes in Man Child by Sabrina Carpenter.
So no, I am not falling to my knees sobbing about poor Zoe and justifying her hatred of men. Home girl put herself in that situation.
