Summary of Backstory: Colress was an ordinary student genius before he met Ghetsis when he was 16. Ghetsis tutored him until Colress finished college, and Colress transitioned from female to male during this period. Colress becomes a scientist, having a steady job. Bored of his job, he takes up Ghetsis' offer at 35, becoming the boss and head scientist of Team Neo Plasma.

Info Tidbits:

Colress is a fan of Hatsune Miku, and owns a few plushies and figures (bought with Ghetsis' money whilst in Team Neo Plasma).

Colress has a platonic sibling like relationship with Rosa/Nate, acting as a mentor/older brother figure. He calls Rosa/Nate "Мала"/"Малій" meaning "small one" as a platonic affectionate term.

Colress talks shit about Ghetsis in Ukrainian, and often writes his scientific notes in the same language.

Colress eventually takes in Genesect after Team Plasma was disbanded, having to study its potential with his new methods. Genesect likes cannon scritches and croissants.

Despite Colress being Slavic, he doesn't have an accent. This was due to being born and raised in Unova.

He likes to spoil his nephew and niece, but he often butts heads with Lusamine. He doesn't consider himself good with kids.

His Sylveon and Meowstic loaf on him, often on the bed. But both cat pokémon often quarrel.

Colress never knew of N, until much later, as Ghetsis never had told him about N.

Hello hello! Me and my pokemon are doing great, all time away from social media considered.

The seed was sent to me by @blujayzmons and I can tell you its finally sprouted from the ground!!

this is dexter. an overly excitable capsakid that has me and my pokemon running in circles trying to catch!!! jesus!! guys, ive worked with plenty of baby grass types, but this one?? so firey and active, even at night!! he just soaks up an ungodly amount of sun and food, gets sunburntc (yes, even grass types can get too much sun,) and then runs around like i did it to him.

hes also got these cute little orange/yellow markings on his cheeks and on his body, but I don't know yet if hes exactly a sort of pepper variant or he just looks like that.

anyways, don't know what to do with him yet, but im this lose to putting him on a permanent leash because hes physically refused a pokeball every time ive offered him one. even kicked it and knocked me square in the head.

Volo and Giratina

Unbeknown to most who knew him, Volo hailed from an old, wealthy family based in western Hisui. He grew up surrounded by old Hisuian faith, raised to believe not only in deities of time and space, but an overarching god referred to as (among many other names) Arceus. While the old faith was not necessarily uncommon among Volo’s generation, belief in Arceus had been declining across the region for many decades, largely oweing to the influx of individuals and clans arriving to Hisui from other Japanese regions.

Volo took a keen interest in Hisuian legends from a young age, which his family initially encouraged. His ancestry stretched back to the most ancient of Hisuian peoples, and so his family had at their disposition an array of records, relics, and artefacts ranging from centuries to over a millennia old. He was fascinated not only by Arcues and the governers of space and time, but by the banished deity of blights, destruction, and chaos, known now as Giratina.

The old Hisuian faith rarely distinguished the creation trio by their names; this is a more modern development. Instead, these deities were viewed principally as three of Arceus’s one thousand ‘arms’, which it had used to shape the universe. Each deity was an extension of Arceus’s will rather than independent being in its own right.

The legend followed that, before the universe was formed, Giratina’s purpose had always been to warp and destroy - to erase what Arceus was not satisfied with, so that it could be reshaped anew. Once the universe had been molded as Arceus chose, it cut off this third, violent arm, sealing it away in an abandoned realm. Volo became preoccupied with this myth in early adulthood, to the point of questioning and unpicking it. If Arceus had banished this violent arm, why did destruction persist in the current world? If Girtaina could destroy where Arceus could create, did this not make them opposites, and thereby equals?

And thus Volo grew to entertain an alternate interpretation of the mythos: that Giratina was not a subservient arm of Arceus, but a god in equal opposition, which presided over a distorted realm of its own. Even as a purely theoretical concept, it was impossibly blasphemous, and Volo’s views met with outrage. But he was too curious and too contrary to relent, even in the face of his family’s horror. He was ostracised by his local community, who believed him corrupted and turned to madness by Giratina itself, and his family ultimately cast him out.

Volo took to wandering Hisui in the years thereafter, never settling anywhere. He kept his family origins a secret, taking on the guise of a Ginkgo merchant, but continued to delve into Hisuian legends . Being cut off from his family only deepened his conviction in his own beliefs. He fixated increasingly on Giratina, convinced that it was his mirror, and that their fates were somehow twinned together. He had been treated as an extension of his family, not an individual, not an equal - just as Giratina had been branded as a mere arm of Arceus. He’d stood against his parents, his ‘creators’, and been banished for it. He was as Giratina was.

And so he set out to find it. There were places in Hisui where alternate realms lay a little too close together - he’d read about them in his family’s ancient records, and he had all the time in the world to seek them out. If he could only commune with Giratina, speak with it, then he might finally find what he was looking for - a being which understood him perfectly.

I find it hard to believe that there are so few variations on the standard Pokemon match, so here’s some ideas for alternate kinds of in-universe Pokemon battles:

Freestyle Battle: An ancient form of Pokemon battle that’s thought to be the earliest kind of battling. Rather than a trainer calling the moves and deciding how they fight, the Pokemon fight on their own using the skills they gained with their trainers, while said trainers support them from the sdielines. Typically 1 on 1 battles with no “enhancements” (megas, g-maxes, ect) allowed.

Somewhat niche in the modern day, but has a massive cult following. Some believe these types of battles are the “purist” kind outside of wild battles, and argue that they put the focus back on the Pokemon instead of on the trainers. However, others argue that Pokemon become stronger with their trainers advice, and having the trainer call the shots helps bring out a Pokemon’s true potential.

Staged Battle: You know how wrestling is fake but it’s really fun to watch? Like that. The matches and their end results are pre-determined and everyone knows this, but the battle is set up to be as entertaining and impressive as possible. Pokemon often are given “characters” and fake backstories for the audience rally for (or against).

Everything Goes Battle: You want to Dynamax five Pokemon at once while one of them holds seven items and your opponent uses a Mega Rayquaza against you? Go full ham. As long as proper battling laws are obeyed, the world is your oyster. Banned in some places due to fear of property destruction.

Wilderness Battle: Rather than battling in an arena, the Pokemon battle outside in a pre-designated wild landscape usually several acres across. This allows them to use the environment to their advantage. Many battlefields include multiple types of terrain, such as woodlands, lakes, rocky cliffs, and deserts depending on the biome.

Stealth Battle: A type of battle that uses a maze-like indoor arena. Some Pokemon rely on stealth out in the wild, and therefore don’t do well when directly facing opponents. In a stealth battle, the two Pokemon (and their trainers) start on opposite ends of the battlefield, and will attempt to sneak up on their opponents in order to attack and wear them down. Very popular with dark and ghost-types.

Sport Battle: Each Pokemon wears a velcro bandana around their neck. Rather than attempting to knock out the opponent, the goal is to steal the bandana off of them before their own is taken. Relies more on speed and clever maneuvers than sheer brute force, as causing the opponent to faint is against the rules. Can be done in singles or doubles, with doubles allowing steal-backs in order to assist teammates.

Underwater Battle: Exclusively for Pokemon that live in the water. As the name implies, the battle takes place underwater in a giant aquarium-like stadium. Trainers are in the water with their Pokemon wearing wetsuits, and call out attacks via intercom transceiver built inside of the suit. Audiences watch from inside a glass runway, much like shark exhibits.

Mental Battle: Exclusively for psychic-types and humans with ESP. The goal is to knock out your opponent without making any physical contact or using any non-psychic moves. This is a niche kind of battle that’s not popular with most audiences, as nothing physically happens and you have to remain quiet the entire time, kind of like a golf match (but with less water waste).

Punchout Battle: Pokemon are forbidden from using their abilities, instead relying solely on psychical strength to win. Popular amongst fighting types. Much like wrestling, Pokemon are matched up based on factors like size and weight. Dynamaxing is heavily encouraged.

Partner Battle: Trainers are given protective gear and a fencing sword, and are sent into the ring to fight alongside their Pokemon. Pokemon do not attack trainers and vice versa; however, both trainer and Pokemon can work to defend themselves from their opponents. Battle is over if trainer is touched by the opponent’s sword three times or if their Pokemon is knocked out. Popular in Galar.

As for my headcanons/theories... most of them are generally character-based, but i have a few I'd be happy to share! (readmore because this gets long ^^")

General headcanons:

All of the Pokémon Leagues in the world vary on strength and community investment. Near the bottom are leagues like Alola's (brand new, little support), Paldea's (made for multiple Champions, one of their leaders double-dips as Elite 4), Kanto's (prolonged, unresolved absence of one Gym Leader, lack of a Champion until your rival), and Unova's (consistent turnover in leaders, champions, and gym locations; only league to canonically be defeated by a Team). From there, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos are all relatively similar in "solid league" territory, with Galar's being the most heavily invested-in and supported league in the series.

Humans with psychic powers, medium abilities, special type affinities (think Iris's "understanding the hearts of Dragons", rather than typical gym leaders), or otherwise inexplicable abilities (whatever the Shadow Triad is doing?) tend to have slightly Pokémon-influenced genetics, as ties back to the infamous Japanese Canalave City library entry. This tends to go many generations back, rather than direct. (No, N is not a Zoroark. Could he be distantly related to one? Maybe.)

The average age for gym challenges varies by region. (Our protags do not necessarily hit that average.) Kanto through Sinnoh skew younger, from 10-12 (since they're all geographically in similar areas). Alola is solidly at 11. Unova and Kalos tend to be somewhere from 13-15. Paldea is literally any age, hence the adults in uniforms. Galar trends older, more towards an average of 16. Yes, this makes Leon's refusal to involve you in any situation ever look sillier. (Leon is considered exceptionally young for the challenge at 10, and all of your potential challengers in the Champion Cup look generally in their older teens. Also, I refuse to believe Marnie's wearing a crop top for her League uniform before she's 16.)

"Official" starter Pokémon are endangered species. Professors generally hope that by giving them to young trainers, they'll encourage species awareness and growth.

Battles follow anime rules more than game rules. Terrain advantages, move combinations to create effects, etc. are all a part of battles. The only exception, for the sake of my sanity when creating content, is that fish Pokémon float. And even I'm aware that's not realistic, even if it's funny.

Character headcanons:

The "main" protags in my mind are Red, Ethan, May, Lucas, Hilda, Rosa, Calem, Selene, Gloria, "Akari", and Florian.

In order of public perception from "weird kid" to "popular kid" for protags: Red, Gloria, Lucas, Selene, May, Hilda, Ethan, "Akari", Calem, Rosa, Florian.

None of the members of either the Galar Gang or the Paldea Gang are normal.

Hop is trans. While his being trans is in no way related to Leon, his attempts at proving himself and trying to live up to his brother's example of masculinity are at least a little related.

Bede's time in the orphanage is a result of parental neglect rather than money or being orphaned by definition.

Nemona is not a stalker, JFC. She's just excited to have a friend equally interested in battling as her for once in her goddamn life. She is very touchy, huggy, clingy without realizing it, though.

Penny is very heavily involved in whatever the Pokémon equivalent of Tumblr and AO3 are. She convinces Arven, Nemona, and Florian to watch anime with her on the regular.
