System Shock remake for Switch 2, Switch launches December 18 - Gematsu
The Switch 2 and Switch versions of the 2023-released System Shock remake will launch on December 18, developer Nightdive Studios announced.
The remake first launched for PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG on May 30, 2023, followed by PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 21, 2024.
“With how the Switch port of System Shock is shaping up—running very smoothly and looking quite good, it could be considered an ‘Impossible Port,’ in the same way that DOOM (2016), Wolfenstein, and The Witcher 3 are considered ‘Impossible Ports’ on the Switch 1,” said Nightdive Studios producer Justin Khan in a press release. “We think fans will be very pleased with the performance and platform-specific functionality we’ve delivered with these System Shock ports for Nintendo‘s consoles.”
Khan added, “Nightdive’s goal was to deliver a System Shock port that sits alongside technical feats like DOOM (2016) and The Witcher 3 on the Nintendo Switch. To achieve that, we retained deferred rendering to keep our dynamic lighting intact, which is a massive challenge on this hardware. We are incredibly proud of the result, and hope the fans feel we’ve earned a spot among those ‘Impossible Ports.'”
Here is an overview of the Nintendo versions, via Nightdive Studos:
About
Nightdive Studios’ stunningly faithful recreation of the 1994 science-fiction action shooter / immersive sim was released to critical acclaim for PC in 2023 and consoles in 2024. Soon, Nintendo gamers will experience this classic for the very first time; the original evil rogue AI, SHODAN, will flaunt her superiority from the palms of their hands as they journey through the dark depths of Citadel Station. The System Shock remake combines the gameplay of the original title with high-definition visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface, and new sounds and music. A legion of hostile and mutated creatures—created and controlled by the delightfully villainous SHODAN—await players as they make their way through Citadel Station. Players will also encounter traps, puzzles, and secrets as they pursue their escape. A combination of stealth, cunning, and futuristic weaponry will be required to survive. During development, Nightdive Studios worked closely with many of the original System Shock team members, including Terri Brosius, the original voice of one of gaming’s most iconic villains: SHODAN. In the Nintendo Switch ports of System Shock, players can expect a range of features, including Joy-Con 2 mouse support, gyro aiming, various community-requested enhancements, and up to 1440p at 60 frames per second when docked and 1080p at 60 frames per second when handheld on the Switch 2.
Key Features
