guys, guess what just rolled over as free from my patreon! it was made as part of the Thankful special going on! i wanted to share it here, too, so all my non-patreon buddies can see it!

runic is a planet from my wip astral sails!

runic - mountains, peaks, sharp edged stone, mist, fog, edges that just stop, massive cats and eyes that gleam in the dark

they're more than just partners, and james has the inked skin to prove it. but they also have a map, and a mutiny, and a trap. when the treasure on runic turns out to be more of a curse than anything else, james finds himself faced with the very question teach has been trying to keep him safe from.

where is the line drawn?

what will an honest man choose when neither outcome is preferable?

will he pick up that gun?

is it even a question?

  As a whole, Plymouth is a small, backwater planet.   It used to be home to one of the largest, most productive coal mines this side of the galaxy. People rushed in front nearby planets, setting up camp and hoping to strike it rich. No one took the weather into account. The more they dug, the more water flooded the mines. Unstable terrain drove miners out, pushed them together in tight clumps, created mass casualties as entire groups were crushed between stone, were lost to sudden crashing water.   And, of all the towns on Plymouth, it’s Bodie that seemingly has it the worst.   This is, simply put, because Bodie is the largest town on Plymouth.    In fact, it’s the only town that still has people living in it.   And it’s dying.   Their main source of income is split between coal sold to the Queen’s navy and the lone inn on the planet, which is run by Andrea Flint. It sits on a curled, half crumbling hill and lays claim to the only port in town. Flickering solar lamps mark the path to the front door. It’s an effort to combat the frequent evening thunderstorms.

some planets from astral sails and their aesthetic -

bodie - dark sand, dirt roads, empty gardens, mine tunnels, flooding plains, gears and rebar, a dying planet.

iscylla - fresh vegetables, herbs, pirate friendly, green haze, a bustling port town that’s good at keeping secrets

picanto two - brass, metal, junk piled in heaps, dead and living, tunnels underneath, used to be a miner’s home

badall - red and orange and green, vibrant plants, twisting vines, grabbing, living, dangerous, alive in ways that seem strange

aluette - snow, white, cutting wind, three moons, deep tunnels, too many eyes and too smart teeth

persidion, the cruise planet.

despite being in such close proximity to bodie, persidion is a planet that thrives on luxuries. smooth, white metal, sleek panes of glass, and blue holo-plants litter the area. it’s known for towering, spiral hotels, solar powered pathways, and starlight that’s enhanced by the invisible dome around the planet.

a lot of cruise ships make stops here on persidion, both to unload, take rests, and load new passengers. the rich like to use cruise ships, in this era, that when piracy has lost its luster in the eyes of the youth, to transport their riches and goods from planet to planet, display their wealth in the form of jewelry, and even host live auctions while on board the lines.

Beige - What kind of foods do you eat when you’re bored?

   anything that doesn’t need to be cooked! he likes fruit and things of that sort, because he can just grab it out of the cabinets as he goes past. tull is his favorite, because it’s cheap and grows best with lots of water, so it’s easy to come by on bodie.   most people don’t eat tull raw because it’s very bitter. james other favorite “bored snack” is probably any sort of fruit? pechrines, again, are the most common on bodie. they’re veryy sour when not ripe and are kind of a cross between peaches and nectarines.

Tan - What is your skin color? Do you like it, or do you wish you looked different?

   pretty pale. there’s not a lot of sun on bodie, and he burns super easily. it’s not something that he puts any thought into until he falls asleep on the bowsprit after they’ve taken port at a red sun planet and he burns like a pastry.   teach is very amused

Buttermilk - Do you prefer pancakes or waffles? (if those exist in your world)

   pancakes!!! they’re soft and fluffy and just??? james loves them!!! his mom used to make them a lot for breakfast hour at the inn!

Oatmeal - What is your usual breakfast?

   back home it was usually pancakes and eggs, with coffee. james would also eat any left-over food on the plates that he gathered up for cleaning after the breakfast rush was over. this includes any leftover coffee.   now, it’s generally left-overs from dinner! stew is a hearty fare when sailing, and it gets thinned out into soup the next morning. herb crusted hard tack is made up just for james and teach, too.

Linen - What clothes do you wear to work?

   steel toed boots, patched up trousers, and a black shirt. he’s got a gaudy bright blue dyed leather coat that he wears, and he loves it a lot. also generally wears a bandanna around his neck, as was common place back on bodie.

Sugar cookie - What reminds you of your childhood?

   storms! rain! thunder! dark places, tunnels, and mines! audio books! old mining hymns being hummed in the other room, the sound of people dragging theirselves downstairs for breakfast.

Sand - Have you ever been to a beach? If so, what’s your favorite thing to do at the beach?

   james goes to a typical beach for the first time while he’s sailing with teach, and he loves the fact that you can go swimming and not die because you stop paying attentiong for ten seconds. also there’s literally nothing better than saying something to piss teach off and then rushing out into the deep waters, where he can’t be gotten.  

Hazel - What kind of folklore/myths/stories are told in your family/community?

   on bodie, most of the stories revolve around the mines. they talk about creatures that live in the deepest of depths, of old creatures chased from their homes that cursed the planet to be this dying, fragile thing.   outside of bodie, they talk of starmaids - creatures with comet streak tails and beguiling voices, with bodies both beautiful and twisted. behemoths that live on the other side of the black hole, and something that tries to lure spacers out into the ether but has no real form, just dark on dark on dark on light. if you hear someone you love call your name in the middle of a space storm, don’t try to find them. they aren’t real.

Sepia - Do you have any hobbies? If so, what are they?

   yes!!!! he likes to listen to audio books! the same one over and over again, actually! james also likes to build things! he’s very good at it, too! james can fix furnaces, venuxian blinds, and most solar run mechanics!    james also likes to go spelunking in the mines, where he does a sort of parkor! there’s also a type of skate board that runs on solar power, and he plays around on that! he built his own, because they couldn’t afford to buy one.

Buff - Would you consider yourself to be fit, fat, or skinny?

   skinny! for someone that is literally always eating, he never gains any weight. is it a health problem? fast metabolism? sheer dumb luck? no one knows.

Latte - Do you like milk in your hot drinks?

    yes!!!! now, james will drink anything. if that coffee is black and has been sitting on the table for 28 hours, james will still drink it. but he prefers milk added into his hot drinks! his mom, sarah, used to make a winter drink popular in bodie that was ¾ths heated milk, ¼ths fresh coffee, and then spices added in! the miners got whiskey splashed in theirs, too.

Zeffer

Blue - Are you a creative person? How do you like to be creative?

   she’s really good at wood work!!! not, like, widdling (that’s marleaf’s department) but when it comes to genuinely building things! she’s also pretty good at making jewelry, but that’s not half as much fun for her.   she’s also creative with her cursing, and very good at flower weaving!

Bronze - What is your favorite way to warm up when it’s cold

   whiskey is her first choice, finding someone to curl up with her second. this is significantly less difficult once she gets her bear companion, as the two just curl up with each other at night.

Butterscotch - Is there candy in the world you live in? If so, do you have a favorite one?

    there are sweet things, but not exactly candy. she likes sugar wafers quite a bit! this is a paper thin pastry that dissolves on the tongue, often made with lavender or rose as the main flavoring.

Blue - Are you a creative person? How do you like to be creative?

   eh, he’s creative when it comes to telling stories. does that count? because not only does he love to tell them, but he’s good at it. teach has been all across the seven galaxies, and he’s collected stories at each planet, from each battle. he’s seen the dragons, heard the song of the starmaids, an felt the bristled leg of massive centipedes.   or has he? it’s hard to tell his truth from his fiction! but then, isn’t that what always makes a goof story teller?

Bronze - What is your favorite way to warm up when it’s cold

    please give him all of the heavy jackets and warm blankets and hot cups of cider.    also james gets into the habit of making hot packs to put on his ports, and that’s always very welcomed and appreciated

Butterscotch - Is there candy in the world you live in? If so, do you have a favorite one?

   some of the planets have candy! bodie, for example, doesn’t. but persidion has a huge market for various sweets! tull petha is his favorite! it’s made using tull, which is a root vegetable that can be compared to white pumpkin. it’s a translucent soft candy popularized on a planet known as ebe.
