♇ very strong opinions, they also have a lot of supporters, though they could also be very annoying and provoking. if they're not careful, they can come off as know it alls.

♱ they could have the decency of being very annoying. but its a great fame indicator because they're very marketable. they also have to be careful about what they say because it can come off as very different to others.

♇ people with this placement are excellent at portraying the roles they are given. and it doesnt necessarily mean career role, personality role and the expectations they're supposed to live up to.

♇ most of them do have romantic controversy like, princess diana, dolly parton and even henry cavill. and most of them could have problems with battling hyper-sexuality. they're people who are easily liked and can be very influential.

♇ people could want to copy their style a lot, especially people like princess diana, alexa demie and eva longoria. they're visionaries so a lot of people trust their judgement when it comes to making creative decisions, and they usually have really beautiful children.

Sun and Mercury:

Sun and Mercury are both centered around intelligence but in different ways; they complete each other. Sun is about divine knowledge and Mercury is about conveying, transmitting or communicating that knowledge or even perhaps analyzing it and extracting more wisdom as well as detail from it so I found this point particularly interesting. Sun illuminates with its rays and gives clarity by providing us with the truth and then Mercury expands on that truth and shares it with others in its charming versatile way as well

Sun vs Mercury sign:

Mercury does not move further than 28 degrees from the Sun meaning that the Mercury sign will always be the sign before or after the Sun sign (zodiacal signs are divided into 30 degrees) and so there is a bit of a differentiation (for lack of a better word) between who we are and the way we communicate and exchange information with other people if the Mercury and Sun signs are not one of the same. First example that comes to mind is having an Aries Sun Taurus Mercury and two people who are quite close to me have these placements; you would not know they were Aries Suns unless u asked hahaha even though one of them is an Aries rising too so that is something I wanted to note as well. Another example would be Sagittarius sun with Scorpio Mercury adding a lot of intensity to the person's communication style as well (which is something I relate to as you will see later on)

Domicile and exaltation:

Sooo Mercury rules over Gemini and Virgo so those are its domicile signs, it is how Mercury can manifest itself most comfortably whilst embodying its true essence. And then Mercury has its exaltation in Virgo as well which is pretty unique might I say and this gives me the vibes of (this my own way of seeing it so take it with a grain of salt) Mercury being more constructive in the sign of Virgo versus in Gemini just because of this particular distinction

But speaking of these two signs I do think they embody their Mercurial energies quite differently and shoutout to my friend @saturnianoracle for giving me the key words to describe this. First of all they are both analytic but Virgo is more of a skeptic I feel while Gemini tends to have more of an open mind. Virgo wants to see the evidence behind certain things to determine the merit or validity, to a certain extent, of the topics at hand to then decides if it wants to invest energy into looking into it more. It is very grounded as well as organized. With Gemini there is a certain sense of childlike curiosity that takes hold of this sign making it want to explore deep topics and of course stimulate its mind; it dives in without thinking and is more disorganized, inconsistent and chaotic I would say, and it loves conversing about its findings as well. I saw a tiktok video ancient astrology based describing Virgo and Gemini as the most intuitive signs which was fascinating to be honest u can watch it here

Detriment and Fall:

Mercury has its detriment in Sagittarius/Pisces and its fall in the sign of Pisces as well and the interesting thing noted in the video I watched (mentioned at the start) is that Sagittarius and Pisces are ruled by Jupiter, the biggest planet ruling over expansion and abundance, and with Mercury being on the smaller side you can really see that distinction of the Mercurial signs really often looking at the detail of things and well in contrast the Jupiter signs seeing the bigger picture. Also Jupiter being a benefic and ruling over luck makes me think that having these two placements is honestly not so bad tbh

Mercury in first house:

Mercury has its planetary joy in the first house of the self, highlighting the utmost importance of the curious, inquisitive and messenger qualities of the planet. What is interesting is the neutrality of Mercury and how we can link that with its joy being in the 1st house; a house that can be above or below the horizon, so even in this regard it stays neutral and does not "pick a side" if that makes sense; "acting as a bridge between the upper and lower hemispheres of the chart, a bridge between the celestial and terrestial realms which are united in the degree of the ascendant".

Neutrality:

Mercury is not seen as a benefic or a malefic; it is considered a neutral planet. Of course, its manifestation and expression can be positive, negative or stay neutral depending on a few factors, such as:

Being in its domicile (Gemini/Virgo) or its exaltation (Virgo) sign is gonna lead it to manifest in a more constructive/beneficial way

Being in its detriment (Sagittarius/Pisces) or its fall (Pisces) sign would generally lead it to manifest in a less constructive way

Aspecting a benefic planet (Jupiter/Venus) would lead Mercury in this instance to manifest in a more constructive way as it is said to adopt the traits of benefic planet it is associated with

Being in a benefic ruled sign; meaning a Jupiter ruled sign as mentioned beforehand (Sagittarius Mercury, Pisces Mercury) or a Venus ruled sign (Taurus Mercury, Libra Mercury) would manifest in the same manner mentioned above

Aspecting a malefic planet (Mars/Saturn) leads Mercury to take on the traits of that malefic planet as well

Being in a malefic ruled sign so either Mars ruled (Aries Mercury, Scorpio Mercury) or Saturn ruled (Capricorn Mercury, Aquarius Mercury) leads us to Mercury adapting to that malefic's traits again

Triplicity also matters and I will make a detailed post on it soon but for now all I can say is that having Mercury in an air sign (Gemini, Aquarius, or Libra) adds on to the "power" that the Mercury placement has within the chart and the support that it gives to the native; if we are dealing with a day chart then Mercury has moderate support in the air sign in question (Saturn being its triplicity lord), and if it is a night chart then it maintains a powerful position within the chart, being its own triplicity ruler. Planetary Joys

Hello! It's me again! I hope you are doing well and if you're not, then I hope it will get better. Inspired by the one particular comment from one of my recent posts about the astrology misconceptions, I want to make a specific post about planetary joys this time. The point of this observation is to explain you why planets find their joy and function well in some houses. I hope you're gonna like it.

Firstly, I want to introduce you the Hellenistic astrology a little bit. Hellenistic astrology is a tradition based in the late Hellenistic period. The practice of this tradition started in the 2nd century BC in Mediterranean Basin, but it was mostly practiced in Egypt. The whole point of Hellenistic astrology is to describe someone's canon events and to predict what is probably going to happen in someone's life through someone's birth chart, not only to describe the person's personality and psyche. Hellenistic astrology is basically like a traditional tropical astrology, meaning that there's only seven planets present in every birth chart (from Sun to Saturn) and we use the Whole Sign system for houses. Forget about the asteroids (Chiron, Lilith, Ceres etc.) here in Hellenistic astrology. We use Hermetic lots in this type of astrology instead. But that's whole another story. In Hellenistic astrology, there's a thing called Planetary joys, meaning that planets find their joy in certain house and that's going to be the theme of this post. So, let's finally get into it!

Sun in the 9th house: The planet Sun finds its joy and functions very well in the 9th house. Both the Sun and the 9th house represent spirituality. The Sun represents pure intelligence, the knowledge we naturally have, which we didn't gain in school and seeing things as they really are. The Sun is a luminary, representing the light which lightens the day. The 9th house represents higher education, wisdom, religion, knowledge etc. Since the 9th house is connected to the Sun, the planet that represents light, father, authority, norms and how things should be, the 9th house is associated with the spirituality we seek beyond and the type of spirituality which is widely accepted, such as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam etc.

Moon in the 3rd house: The planet Moon finds its joy and functions very well in the 3rd house. The Moon is also a luminary which represents the light and seeing things clearly. But, since the Moon lightens the night it's possible that there's hidden aspects or area of this planet. The 3rd house also represents spirituality, just like the previous house, but the 3rd house is mostly related with the type of spirituality we seek within and that is not very mainstream or widely accepted, such as magic, witchcraft, wicca, palm readings or even Tarot readings. The 3rd house also represents cousins we may not be aware of their existence. Have you ever heard that almost every celebrity from Hollywood has a 11th or 14th cousin, but they don't know that they're actually cousins? Although the Moon represents the light, it can also represents something hidden or uncertain in our life, as it illuminates the night.

Mercury in the 1st house: The planet Mercury finds its joy and functions very well in the 1st house. Mercury represents communication, unpredictability, adaptivity, logic, chaos, contradictory and it functions well in both day and night, while the 1st house represents the life itself. Communication is the key everywhere in life. In astrology, we interpret both the cosmos and the human's life. Mercury is the planet that is associated with astrology the most, because in astrology, we describe the movement of celestial bodies, interpret the planets, houses and aspects together to make predictions and give guidance. Mercury represents multitasking, doing everything at once and is the messenger in Roman mythology. Life is like a wheel of fortune, it is very unpredictable, chaotic and sometimes it doesn't make any sense. And if you wonder which planet represents the unpredictable area of your life where nothing makes sense, that's Mercury.

Venus in the 5th house: The planet Venus finds its joy and functions very well in the 5th house. Venus is a benefic and a positive planet, representing fertility, creativity, giving birth to a new idea or a life and the area of our life which favors us or works out in our favor. The 5th house is one of the most positive houses and is connected with Venus because the 5th house represents good fortune, privileges or good things that happen in our life, such as good circumstances, good health, wealth, children, fame etc. Having the 5th house placements might indicate being in a privileged positions, enjoying the life, going into great schools, having a nice car, being lucky that you don't have to work, doing something that fulfills us, having children or even getting the princess treatment.

Mars in the 6th house: The planet Mars finds its joy and functions very well in the 6th house. Mars is a malefic and a negative planet, representing war, violence, labor, taking forced actions, commanders, danger etc. The 6th house represents slavery, hard-work that leads to nowhere, misfortune, working class, challenges, bad things that happen in our life, bad circumstances, bad health etc. Having the prominent 6th house in our birth chart may indicate taking forced actions we don't want to take, but we don't have other choice, like working 9-5, getting a credit to buy a house, paying bills and something similar. It can also indicate going to not very nice school, having a bad car and working a job that drains us and that we hate. Unfortunately, that's usually a story of almost every normal or average person.

Jupiter in the 11th house: The planet Jupiter finds its joy and functions very well in the 11th house. Jupiter is also a benefic and a positive planet, representing luck, abundance and the area of our life that works out in our favor. It also represents the faith, morality, churches, schools, universities and all of the places where there's a lot of people coming together. The 11th house is one of the most positive houses in astrology, representing the success, victory, gains, good spirit or good things that happens in our mind. Jupiter is related to the 11th house because the 11th house represents the privileges in our life and the people that help us to achieve our goals because they want us to succeed. Jupiter represents collectivity, while the 11th house represents friends and that's another reason why they're connected.

Saturn in the 12th house: The planet Saturn finds its joy and functions very well in the 12th house. Saturn is the most distant planet from the Sun, representing darkness, isolation, losses, marginalized people, outcasts, death and ending of a cycle. When there's the darkness, we cannot see things as clear as they are. The 12th house also represents isolation, losses and marginalized people who don't have a community, since the 12th house hides behind the 1st house which represents life. Having the prominent Saturn or 12th house in someone's chart might indicate someone feeling melancholic about their own limited life. That person may feel like an outcast or that they don't belong anywhere. It's a lonely path if you have the prominent Saturn or the prominent 12th house in your birth chart. There's a lot of mental battles coming with these placements, since the 12th house represents mental health.

Well, I guess that might be it. I hope you learned something new today. Keep in mind that this observation is related mostly to Hellenistic astrology. the 12 houses/axis + planetary joys

Planetary joys made simple 🌌

Before we get to the bulk of the topic, it’s always important to state that houses are not inherently or “naturally” ruled by any sign in traditional astrology. The 12 letter alphabet (also known as the ABC house system) is a modern concept that does not find its roots in the tradition and while occasional commonalities can be encountered, houses and signs fundamentally exist separately and to conflate them is to misconceive them as they are distinct structures that deserve to be properly understood separately. An analogy I like is one where you see signs as crayons or brushes, planets as artists, and houses as a canvas. Or, think of signs as costumes, planets as actors, and houses as the stage where a play takes place.

Now back to topic. The concept of planetary joys finds its origins in Hellenistic astrology dating back all the way to the 2nd millennium BCE. This concept utilizes the whole sign house system, and entails that planets may have given some of their signifiers to certain houses. This doesn’t translate to houses being inherently connected to said planets, it simply entails that certain house significations were derived from certain planets, and that a given planet is most comfortable in a given house. It also denotes similarity — and gives us a clear idea as to which house is most like which planet.

Starting from the 1H, we can list:

Mercury — rejoices in the first house.

Moon — rejoices in the third house.

Venus — rejoices in the fifth house.

Mars — rejoices in the sixth house.

Sun — rejoices in the ninth house.

Jupiter — rejoices in the eleventh house.

Saturn — rejoices in the twelfth house.

Mercury is a somewhat neutral planet, and in a similar fashion, the 1st house has no clear diurnal/nocturnal status, though it is granted a slightly diurnal status owing to it coinciding with the time where night turns into day. Consequently, Mercury rejoices in the 1st Place, known as the Helm. It may not seem intuitive at first glance, but there is a logic to it as our mercurial functions grow alongside us, and everything we encounter in life is information processed by our brains and bodies. This is the “you” house, the ascendant, a place of being, inception, free will, incarnation, verbalization, & selfhood.

The Moon is purely nocturnal, and neither benefic or malefic, not unlike the 3rd house, where the Sun changes direction as far as the night goes — so the moon rejoicing in what is traditionally known as the house of “Goddess” (Θεά) makes ample sense. The 3rd house is associated with your immediate community, your everyday routines, short distance travel, commutes, siblings, story telling, places of worship, writing, school, communal life, etc. What’s more, is that the lunar calendar has for a very long time set the tone as to where given communities were headed within specific time slots. The connection is rather immediate and intuitive, come to think of it.

The connection between Venus & the 5th house is just as glaringly obvious, if not even more so. Venus is the nocturnal benefic. The 5th house, known as “Good Fortune” is, while below the horizon, still setting and aspecting the 1st house. It’s a house of creativity & creation, art in its many forms, pleasure (sexual or otherwise), romance, charity, diplomacy, praise & worship. Under a capitalistic climate, both Venus & the 5th house are overlooked and deemed unimportant in favour of houses that can be made “profitable” such as the 10th house, but what is the point of being if not to enjoy life?

Next up is Mars, the celestial puppy nocturnal malefic. The 6th house is a not so positive house traditionally, as it is in aversion to the 1st place. It’s referred to as the “place of Bad Fortune”. Mars is a known chaos bringer, and this is the house of all sorts of nuisances, but also remedies. Overwhelming workloads, labour, illness, survival, medicine, herbalism, power, force, fighting, health, medical professionals, pets and small animals (notorious survivalists) are 6th house signifiers. While this house does stand for routines, it usually isn’t the kind that make your life more pleasant (those are more up the 3H’s alley) but things you do out of necessity — work, chores, health check ups, etc. Straightforward correlation.

The Sun is diurnal, neither benefic nor malefic. It’s considered all-seeing, omnipresent, and neutral in disposition, though certain texts (which I fully align with) deem it conditionally malefic. The Sun rejoices in the 9th because it's the most diurnal place, and is in a trine aspect with the ascendant. In traditional astrology, the Sun was defined rather differently than it modernly is, and its qualifiers aligned best with the house of “God” (θεός), the 9H, which is the house of purpose, among others. Here is where the “what purpose was I born for? why am I alive? who am I? what do I want to be?” question finds their answers, in that sense, which explains its association with spirituality, astrology, divination, teachers & professors, higher education & academic pursuits, religion, philosophy & world view. (Under the lens that sun is slightly malefic, these correlations can be seen in the more extreme manifestation of the previously stated topics — zealotry/fanaticism, religious extremism, holy wars, chauvinism, hubris & intellectual arrogance). It’s also the house of long distance travel (which, in a historical context, referred primarily to pilgrimage).

Jupiter is the diurnal benefic. The 11th is succedent, located above the horizon and in a sextile aspect to the 1st. The 11th house is known as “αγαθός δαίμων (= good spirit)”. Traditionally speaking, it’s the house of gifts, allyship & alliances, friendship, community in the broader sense, networks, opportunities, fortunate encounters, political parties & factions, and jupiter is a bringer of growth, prosperity, expansion, abundance, luck, and excess. Side note, but out of all the ABC house correlations, the one I found least coherent was the Aquarius = 11th house conflation (all the others share 2nd place though, objectively) as their principles are antipodal at best, but that’s a topic for another day.

And last but not least, Saturn is the diurnal malefic. And alongside the 8H, the 12th house (known as “Κακός δαίμων = bad spirit”) is a diurnal malefic house, as it is in aversion to the 1st. It’s the house that coincides with the time that precedes your birth, while your mother was in labor or undergoing c-section. The thematics this house derives from Saturn are isolation, suffering, psychological health/illness, the subconscious mind, that which is lost and forgotten, hospitals, stillness, large animals & sublimation. Unseen circumstances that harm the native. Alienation, hardships, self-undoing, hidden enemies, malice & misfortune. Do keep in mind however that the 12th house does not exist in a vacuum, and the extent of its influence on each individual hinges upon more than just it being a house where you might have placements. Overall condition, activation, transits, the presence of mitigating factors, natal promise, etc. They all matter.

Concluding observation that I find extremely cute: 6 out of the 7 planetary joys form pairs using the opposition aspect. The malefics oppose each other, the benefics oppose each other and the luminaries oppose each other.

The Planetary Joys

The planetary joys are an ancient conceptualization of a relationship between the seven traditional planets and the houses. More specifically, a planet is assigned one house each. These joys show the similarity between a planet and the house in which it joys.

The Sun has his joy in the 9th house. Both are connected to divinity and our relationship with divinity.

The Moon has her joy in the 3rd house. Both traditionally deal with our communication and familiar surroundings.

Mercury has their joy in the 1st house. Both deal with a sense of duality.

Venus has her joy in the 5th house. Both deal with sex, creativity and pleasure.

Mars has his joy in the 6th house. Both deal with injuries.

Jupiter has his joy in the 11th house. Both deal with friendship, fellowship and gifts.

Saturn has her joy in the 12th house. Both deal with isolation and afflictions.

As this is a traditional scheme, it doesn’t involve Uranus, Neptune or Pluto.

The Planetary Joys in Hellenistic Astrology

Hellenistic Astrology was the lineage of traditions that were practiced across the Greco-Roman world from about 100BC to about 600AD. Their system looked drastically different than the type of astrology we have in the modern day, and one of those differences was a system of determining planetary strength based off of house placement.

This system is not the same as that of sign rulership, nor is it the modern “Alphabet” system of planetary house rulership. When examining these placement one should use the ‘whole sign’ system of house division, since it’s what Hellenistic astrologers would have used.

 **while there are many more complexities and radical differences one should consider when looking at a chart through the Hellenistic lens, it’s fun to examine even a small part of what ancient astrologers would have seen.
