Intro Post

Hi! My name is Mars and this is my studyblr! I’m 16, I use they/them pronouns and I’m going into my junior year of high school. Last year I fell behind in school and didn’t finish English 10 or Geometry and will be taking those classes again. I was in treatment in late spring and now I’m feeling better, and I’m ready and excited for the school year!

The classes I will be taking in the beginning of the year are Geometry, Econ, English 10, and Physics. I go to an alternative high school, and I’ll be doing almost all of my studying at school.

I’m hoping this studyblr will keep me motivated, and hopefully I’ll make some friends!

I was inspired by @lazyhermione, @gryfhindor, and @planetarystudies.

(br) i would recommend posting more pictures of your planner!! i really love seeing how people utilize planners instead of using a typical bullet journal!

once school starts and i have things to actually put in my planner (i’ve been such a lazy bum this summer lol) i will totally upload more pictures of my agenda!!! thank you!!

hi! i was wondering if you'd want to make a post about how you annotate poetry! i would love to see it :). thanks!

Poetry Annotations

I start by reading the poem at least 3 times through, and think about the overall meaning / theme of it. 

These are the things I consider as I read the poem:

significance of title

structure (number of stanzas, rhyme scheme)

language (any devices that are used or any particularly interesting words / phrases)

form (ballad, sonnet, free verse)

the poem and the poet’s context

If I identify a rhyme scheme, I write it down the side, with each letter corresponding to a line (e.g. ABCABC).

If there is a particular form, I write that, large, at the top of the page.

Any context I have found out from research I tend to write at the bottom of the page, by the poet’s name. 

Lastly, if I notice any interesting language either in the poem or the title, I highlight it. Then I use the highlighter to draw a line away from the phrase to the edge of the page, where I use a normal pen to write down any thoughts I’ve had. 

For example, in Futitlity by Wilfred Owen, I highlighted the phrase ‘half-sown’, and drew a line away from it to a blank space. There I wrote: unfinished; soldier has not grown / realised full potential; premature death.

Once finished, I go back to what I originally thought the main theme was, and see if I have changed my mind. I then write this theme with a highlighted box around it, because ultimately it’s the most important thing!
