Here, have another perfectly nice game.

You are a space merchant, down on his space luck. Your only hope of success is to aggressively colonize planets from other planets. Owning entire planets and enough money to spawn hordes of death machine is not my usual definition of being down on your space luck, but the game is a bit tongue-in-cheek. Tongue-in-cheek is probably necessary, since every time you capture a planet, you’re semi-explicitly wiping out its population.

So it’s a bit of a joke about capitalism and aggressive expansion. It’s also pretty simple to pick up and play. You click on a planet until you’ve spawned enough ships to take it. You upgrade planets you take until they’re productive. You use money for both of these things. Some planets are neutral and some are similarly aggressive capitalists who want to take your junk; neutral planets aren’t together, and so can’t retaliate if you snag one. 

Different levels have different objectives. Sometimes, you have to take marked planets as fast as possible. Sometimes, you have to hold a planet as long as possible. I have no doubt this gets increasingly complex as you go, until your hordes are competing with fifteen other enemies continually taking your junk, there are death stars everywhere, etc., but the game is nice enough about teaching you how to play first. Just keep in mind that spawning death machines drains your planet’s population, making it a juicy target for your foes.

The presentation is pleasant and colorful, the music, according to my husband, sounds way too much like the Sims, your mileage may vary.

Verdict: The nicest little lunch-break game about wiping people out for no good reason. Also has multiplayer. It’s decently substantial.

Planets Under Attack – Space bum

Game: Planets Under Attack

Released: 14th November

Age rating: 3

Price: 1200 MSP / £10.20

Genre: Space real time strategy

Gameplay: Send you fleets of space ships into glorious battle. It's less exciting than it sounds. Gameplay largely consists of selecting a planet to send ships to, waiting, then: 'Oh I captured it, yay', waiting for more ships to accumulate then sending off some more to capture other planets, be they neutral or enemy.

Games like this thrive on simplicity, accessibility and ease of use. This game appears to be dead simple but quite often you'll be left wondering why things won't do what you want them too.

Say you want to leave 40 ships on a planet as a guard, you can't do that. You can set a planet to 'guard' and no ships will leave but you can't designated a set number to stay quickly and easily. Cash flow not going up? Okay, is it because I'm attacking? Or just 'cos I don't have any ships left on said planet? Does moving ships between my planets count as attacking?

You probably be baffled too; if you're some kind of masochist you might keep playing and find out what the hell it is you're supposed to be doing and find some enjoyment. Me? Sorry, but I'm out.

Visuals and Sound: The graphics are functional rather than amazing, the vague steam-punk theme is largely irrelevant as once you're in-game things are just spheres for planets and funny little spiky things for ships.

The music also chugs round and around and will begin to annoy very quickly.

Controlling the games main resource, the ships, is a big hassle.

Quite difficult to get your head round exactly what it is you need to do, to make things do what you want.

Worth a purchase?: It's very similar to Mayhem Intergalactic, a great but little known game on Steam, that has the same basic method of gameplay but is entirely turn-based and works much better. You can understand Mayhem Intergalactic in seconds, this...not so much.

This is a limited and quite frustrating game and, in short, isn't any fun.
