Shows writing
I'm gonna start this by saying I am not a professional writer, I am not a good writer by any means, but I am a person with an opinion and I think my opinion is right in this case.
What is my opinion exactly?
I think shows should be written in full - at least every plot point, story beat, character arc, ect - before you pitch your show for it to be made.
stay with me. I don't mean write the entire script - though you can and it'd work for you probably. I mean have an understanding and a plan to how your story will play out so when you go to get green lit, the people working with you know exactly how the show will be.
I don't know if this is true - feel free to correct me - but YellowJackets as written fully, all 5 seasons planned out when the pilot was pitched, they had everything planned out and probably just needed the actual scenes and dialogue written. do that.
plan the whole show, if you want 3 seasons to tell your story, plan those seasons before going in for the first one. on top of that, also plan for if you only get one season, if you aim for three and get two. the show should still work and end in a way that allows for more but closes up nicely after each season.
think of it like the graphic on trains that show you each stop along the way (dunno if that's a thing everywhere but it is where I am). every stop on that train is the end of a season. Each stop should be able to end there and still be cohesive. season one should work on its own without a need for more. a season two should work with the first to flow without messing up the story set up originally and also not need more to be a coherent story.
This already happens already, i'm not the first to come up with this in the slightest but I do think its relevant now (as of writing this) with stranger things season 5 being a mess. I don't know if they planned ahead or if every season was pulled from nothing because they were given more to make but it seems like the second.
i just think so many shows get made that clearly don't have a planned out story and that either leads to too many seasons or the ending being mid/bad - though some do work out but plan your shit - like I swear Riverdale just went on and on and on with no semblance of anything! I every so often see a clip of Madelaine Petsch talking about riverdale with I think Jimmy fallon (I might be wrong) where she's asked about her character and she talks about how her brother dies in one season and then she has his corpse in a chest a season or two later and then she has a funeral for him in another season yet has his bones in a season after that... that is a bad case of no plan... and greed for money.
Moral of this post, plan your stories! have a general idea of what the fuck is meant to happen and how everything cleans up in the end with tie ups throughout the seasons or movies or books even to keep everything cohesive even if its cut short.
