What are some chemicals of lavender’s smell?

Lavender is frequently used as an ornamental plant because its beautiful blue flowers. Its extracted essential oil is a complex mixture of phytochemicals. Some of those chemicals include linalool, lavandulol, linalyl acetate, lavandulyl acetate.

Linalool has two enantiomers found in nature. The (R)-(-)-linalool, licareol, is responsible for the scent of lavender. The (S)-(+)-linalool, coriandrol, is found in coriander seed oils and sweet orange flowers.

Although lavender oil is widely used, some people are allergic to it. This might be related to the fact that air-exposed linalool forms hydroperoxides, the strongest allergens of the oxidation product tested.
