Hello friends of Alchemy! I am back here to post some announcements.

This summer I got a traditional publishing deal in China on chemical element illustrations (and my friend’s chemical element photos)! We work with an amazing acquisition editor and our publishing house is most famous for its science creative non-fiction publications.

I’m probably going to make more illustrated topics on environmental science, culture, and chemistry in our real life; currently also talking with my acquisition editor about a possible book idea surrounding those topics. Throughout this year, I’ve tried to run speculative design projects, and 3D molecule projects, but non of them worked very well in terms of making my audience think in a fun, creative way.

I studied environmental studies and visual arts during undergraduate (along with a chem minor) , and I’m doing a design MFA at art school now. It’s very interesting to keep in touch with my STEAM heritage, find connections between ideas, and solve problems in an interdisciplinary way. I love illustrating, I love 3D design, I love storytelling, I love diagrams, I love coding, I love edutainment. Now it’s time for me to transform what I learnt into some flaming creativity!

Too many people have an unhealthy relationship with math.

I'm serious.

If people didn't fucking talk shit about math and how ~scary and hard~ it is all the goddamn time like they do about NO other basic fucking skill on the damn planet, I'm pretty sure most people would have a higher background level of numeracy, because they wouldn't be so fucking terrified of it or so foolishly convinced that it's just so hard that is beyond them.

My dad is a mathematician and I found out a few years ago that when I was a little kid and he went to Meet the Teacher nights at school, a lot of the teachers, who were sometimes responsible for teaching math to us little elementary school gremlins, would respond to learning this about him with some form of nervous "ah ha ha I'm just so bad at math/I find math so hard" and he would tell them that that was fine, but gently ask them to never mention that to the kids they were teaching, because it could spark math anxiety and make the kids feel like it was too difficult to learn when it really wasn't.

And the teachers seemed to take that advice to heart, because I have no memories of any teacher saying anything off-putting about math during that time, and the kids I was at school with seemed to view math as just another subject (as they should) instead of some special hell that could only be mastered by geniuses or weirdos, which is an attitude so many people seem to have.

Anyway, really glad my dad did that, wish more teachers and adults heard the "don't make kids terrified of math" advice too.

One thing that I've learnt as a tutor is that no matter how much you want to empathize with your students' difficulty, DON'T tell them that the subject is hard.

What are some chemicals of lavender’s smell?

Lavender is frequently used as an ornamental plant because its beautiful blue flowers. Its extracted essential oil is a complex mixture of phytochemicals. Some of those chemicals include linalool, lavandulol, linalyl acetate, lavandulyl acetate.

Linalool has two enantiomers found in nature. The (R)-(-)-linalool, licareol, is responsible for the scent of lavender. The (S)-(+)-linalool, coriandrol, is found in coriander seed oils and sweet orange flowers.

Although lavender oil is widely used, some people are allergic to it. This might be related to the fact that air-exposed linalool forms hydroperoxides, the strongest allergens of the oxidation product tested.

If you put cream in a freezer, you would get a bulk of hardened cream, instead of ice cream. The delicate frozen emulsion has some interesting science behind it.
