Thoughts On The Sparrow Academy’s Powers

because oh boy do i have MANY thoughts

Number 1 - Marcus: Marcus is described as ‘charming, chiselled and colossus’, as well as ‘keeping the family together’ and being ‘a natural leader who oozes confidence’. They seem to be leaning pretty hard into the Luther parallel, which suggests he likely has a similar power. In the comics, the sparrows’ number 1 has super strength, just like Luther, so i think Marcus either has that or has some form of super resistance like Luther has also demonstrated.

Number 2 - Ben: Ben is an interesting case because he may just have the same power. However, his character description is decidedly far from umbrella!Ben’s personality, as well as being a fairly good parallel to Diego. I think it would be interesting if he has Diego’s breath-holding power from the comics, as it would be in-keeping with him being number 2, as well as being somewhat fitting when compared to umbrella!Ben’s power. 

Number 3 - Fei: Fei is described as ‘seeing the world in a special way’ which is intriguing as fuck. My best guess is she can give people visions, Scarlet Witch-style. This would be a fitting parallel to Allison’s rumours, although it’s overpowered as all hell. 

Number 4 - Alphonso: Alphonso is described as ‘bearing his scars from years of crime fighting’, which sounds very Diego-ish tbh. In the comics, one of the sparrows can apparently ‘release blasts from their face’ which makes sense with the scar thing. It would also be a good parallel to Klaus, with them both having powers that would really fuck them up with consistent use. I also think Alphonso might be blind (likely because of this power) but i’ll get back to that.

Number 5 - Sloane: Sloane is described as ‘a romantic and a dreamer’ who is ‘eager to see the world and experience life outside her upbringing’ which says to me that she maybe wants to distance herself from the academy and possibly her power. In the comics, one of the sparrows (’Carla’) can heal injuries in some way, which i think would fit Sloane quite well. I’ve seen some people say Carla specifically can transfer injuries from one person to another, which I personally find really interesting. It would be a nice parallel to five, if she can ‘teleport’ injuries (ok i know its a stretch but just go with it). Also, if her power is quite literally injuring people, it would make sense for her to want to get away from the academy and maybe find a way to help people that doesn’t hurt others. 

Number 6 - Jayme: My favourite sparrow! Jayme is described as ‘a loner under a hoodie’, who ‘has a fear-inducing snarl you’ll want to avoid at all costs’. To me, this suggests she has some sort of Medusa-esque power where if someone looks her in the eye they are maybe paralyzed (given the phrase ‘paralyzed with fear’). This would be a nice parallel to Ben, since they would both have powers inspired by mythos. In one of the leaked posters for s3, we see the silhouettes of the sparrows with dots for eyes, and one of them has a red line across their eyes instead, which looks like some sort of mask. This would make sense to be Jayme. This also brings me back to Alphonso; unfortunately i can’t find a source, but i remember reading that he’s Jayme’s ‘only friend’ or something along those lines. If i’m correct about their powers, it would make sense that he would be blind.

Number 7 - Christopher: Since we already know Christopher’s powers (’telekinetic’, and ‘can turn the room freezing cold and induce paralyzing fear’), i’m going to propose another theory: he isn’t one of the 43. He’s said to be ‘of unknown origin’ which suggests his origin is a plot point of some sort; if he was one of the 43, why say that? Furthermore, if i’m correct about the others’ powers, Christopher just seems to have a combination of Fei and Jayme’s. Given what we know about Reginald, i think it’s possible one of the sparrows died before the kids were old enough to fight real crime. Reggie, being the insane person alien he is, maybe tried to replace the dead sparrow (presumably number 7) with a robot of some sort (after all, he did the same with the nannies). Maybe he took dna from some of the others and suspended it ‘psykronium’, creating Christopher. Yeah, this is a bit of a crack theory but i didn’t know what else to put here and it’s in character for Mr. Veggie to do something like this. 

BONUS - The Etymology of ‘Psykronium’: I assumed it was a pre-established sci-fi thing but apparently not so i did some digging. ‘Psy’ seems to come from the prefix ‘psych’, which is of greek origin and means ‘mind’. ‘kron’ likely comes from the greek ‘kronos’, meaning ‘time’. and ‘ium’ is a suffiix that comes from latin and generally refers to a metallic element or biological structure. so ‘psykronium’ literally means ‘mind time substance’. do with that what you will.

Ok some questions!!

1 Who is more fussy about their personal hygiene? Would they ever tell the other off for being smelly and needing to wash?

2 Who is tidier generally and does he get grumpy tidying up after the other? (I can think of at least one ref to this in canon)

3 Has either ever thrown away something of the other’s by mistake and then lived to regret it?

4 Who is more likely to crush on someone famous and then speak constantly about him to the other one?

5 Have they ever got into a really serious fight about what the other one did in a gay bar, by letting other men over indulge?? Or are they so into each other this just doesn’t happen?

1. Kurt - they both are but he's the one who got Blaine into a skin care regime in my mind and Blaine enjoys what it does to his face but he could take it or leave it and does it really only because Kurt enjoys it. Also I feel like Kurt would be more apt to say 'Ew go shower!' after Blaine works out before they do anything sexy together but when push comes to shove they both like each other a little sweaty sometimes. Depends on the mood.

2. Blaine - and only sometimes does he get grumpy. I think they're both fairly tidy people but I mean Blaine infamously doesn't like Kurt to wipe his mouth on a towel and leave it around so...

3. I once wrote a fic in Life In A Year where Kurt accidentally donated a lot of Blaine's bowties but in canon? I don't think so. Maybe Blaine's thrown out a cream that he thinks empty while tidying and Kurt gets a little pissed about it but nothing major.

4. Blaine - Tom Hardy comes to mind. But I don't think he talks about it constantly. He's just more apt to crush on celebrities. Kurt finds celebrities attractive but he doesn't really crush on them especially as he gets older.

5. They find it funny and play into it sometimes but yeah especially as they get older they're secure in themselves as a couple and just laugh it off and then dance and make out together.
