I realized I should add world building to the borrower au thing so here’s this:

In this world, humans don’t know about borrowers. They live in secret like usual, some alone in peoples homes or the wilderness, some live in indoor or outdoor colonies, but they all still depend on their secrecy and stealth to survive.

Borrowers are also not a single species. They can be essentially mini humans, but borrowers with entirely human features are very unlikely to be born. This is because most borrowers are hybrids of small rodents, a few are hybrids of small animals or reptiles, and even fewer are hybrids of insects or amphibians. Bird hybrid borrowers are about as rare as reptile and small animal hybrids, but rarely choose to live with borrowers that can’t fly, and make colonies almost exclusively for avians.

I’m gonna put more under the cut because this is kinda long, but please read it if you’re interested in my au! And don’t forget to ask questions about whoever cause I’m not kidding when I say I’ve included almost everyone from the dsmp and will be doing drawings along with the characters in my response probably

Borrowers can also, though this is extremely rare, be born with a genetic predisposition to magic. Nothing special or very powerful, but they can summon small flashes of light to distract or scare away larger predators (think pop-it fireworks but slightly louder and way brighter), and the light color varies from borrower to borrower. They also posses abilities to slightly domesticate animals, though it only becomes permanent through a lot of exposure to the animal, so it’s mainly done to keep animals docile while they’re near borrowers. This also helps them win most fights against hybrids. Most magic inclined borrowers live in colonies and use their abilities to become scouts and guards for other borrowers.

Though these forms of magic are only what’s genetically given to these few borrowers. Magic is not only a genetic trait, and it’s not just borrowers with the potential to do magic, but it’s pretty much a lost art. Few borrowers put in the time and patience to learn magic, especially when there’s so little to learn anymore. It’s a time consuming and frustrating process, especially with the added fact that almost all magic users are dead and their books burned, though that’s not to say they haven’t found some surviving copies and aren’t still looking for more. And though humans could use magic, there hasn’t been a recorded magic user in decades, so it’s widely accepted by borrowers that humans have lost all learning resources and can no longer do magic, and the wide majority of humans chalk magic up to trick of the eye.
