Your cup never stays full when you're in a chronic people-pleasing mode.
2021.12.19 | "In many ways, over-giving is a way of extending yourself to others because you don’t want others to go through pain you’ve gone through before. It arises from deep empathy. But the dark side of this is that, for most of us, it also arises from a deep wound of not feeling worthy enough. Keyword being “enough.”"
I no longer trust people who tell me outright they’re “people pleasers”. Real people pleasers try to hide that away and hope to god it wont be used against them, that they wont be taken advantage of and used for favours and tasks endlessly. Being a people pleaser is nothing to brag about, it’s a vulnerability people readily exploit while feeling zero guilt.
People telling you they’re a people pleaser are trying to lower your guard. They’re trying to make you think “oh, this must be a nice person! they’ll try to see to my needs as much as I’ll try to see to theirs!”. But they will not. They want you thinking it’s safe to please them instead. It’s not. They will not do it back. Real people pleasers say silent and hope they’ll manage to say no, hold their ground and resist their deep fear that they’re completely unlovable and worthless if they’re not useful and pleasing enough. Admitting this struggle out loud would be insane, like asking to be manipulated and used. Those who say it at introduction are not struggling with it.
It's natural to some people to please without trying, and others to always say and do the wrong thing in the wrong place.
Louisa May Alcott, ‘Little Women’
Today at work a lady didn't like the fact that her beans were touching her fish, so I put the beans in a little to go cup and gave it back but she said she wanted more beans because the cup wasn't filled to the top and I was like aight so I went in back and instead just poured the beans into a smaller cup and she was like "much better."
I lose brain cells every time I go in there.
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Galatians 1:10 NIV
interesting thought i had yesterday. if some people like me then i have to perfect to be liked/normal in everyone’s eyes but i keep disappointing people and think that everyone hates me. but then if really EVERYBODY hates me i feel so sad but then i am free. if everybody hates me i don’t have to please everyone and i can just live. it’s still melancholic but kind of relief. and then i remember that there are a couple people who genuinely like me. and the world is a kinder place. until i go back to the beginning and the cycle starts again
