This is Lu Mcallister's and Tiago Lehmann 's characters from the indy comic "Plumba", that I love very much! Done back in 2017. ❤️
Tales of Ealden Cynedom: Tale 35. The Great Garden (5/5)
35. The Great Garden (chapter5 - Winter 5/5 ) part 8. Stories of Dreams.

As frost came, the Tree-Children slept in the courtyards; While others woke in the green house. Amadeus had resorted to blood scripts to keep out the chill. He told himself this is a way of protecting magic, though it wasn’t his definition of Paladin. Each time Amadeus replaced a rune, he contemplated the devastation to himself and the Tree King, if one of the winter herbs died. It tortured Amadeus. Each member of the garden had a name, and were his first friends.
The sleeping fey where adorned in blue ornaments and lights that winter; They’d given Amadeus permission to dress them, as they wouldn’t be awake for his and Scarlet’s union. Scarlet admired them while waiting for Amadeus, smiling at their whimsy. Laughter and clinking was heard, while Amadeus whispered the last climate spell in the greenhouse. Some of the blood elixir had dripped onto the train of his white beaded skirt. It rolled off like ruby beads, due to the restoration tags sewed into the gentle voile. As Southland robes where unisex wraps and jackets, Amadeus chose to wear the gathered drapes his mother did for her wedding. After the ceremony, he would have access to f Rosethorn’s finances, and pay Fama for the replacement glass.
That’s all the occasion was. Bland paperwork. Amadeus and Scarlet already lived together, and have known each other their whole lives. They danced, toasted, and shared a True Loves Kiss again. The day was an excuse to hold each other. Weddings in the Grand West, were words and promises; Made long after hearts had already vowed.
Rah was the only one who could make it to the party. Many community members also attended, as Pepperidge was so small that everyone knew each other. But for Amadeus, it wasn’t the same without Morgan or his mother.
For the wedding, Amadeus chose to serve sparkling juice and water, to avoid the incident on his birthday. This time, everyone decided to dance at day, settle at dusk, and wake to the night with Amadeus. The patio furniture had been moved from the gazebo garden, under the fire cherry, whose fragrant orchid leaves had fallen. Amadeus and Scarlet stood impatiently, as an heirloom silk was wrapped around their hands to a traditional poem; Of which only the mages understood, as it was in the original Ealden Anglian words. The couple went around to blow out the candles of ten witnesses, before their kiss on the platform. Each community members then signed a foiled piece of paper, and the estate manager slipped the document into his suitcase.
“Master Rosethorn, do you wish to change any payments? Purchases? Taxes? Raises? Wed and grown, you’re officially filthy rich.” The Manager jittered. Amadeus grimaced.
“No. Yes. Yes. No.” Amadeus responded. “Just get me the darn fairy glass, from Fama, who has sacks of Indonian sand without rent for a forge. May I resume dancing with my wife, and speaking with friends?” He said firmly. His cat like white stare piercing down at his employee. The man nodded, and slunk to the punch bowl.
Everyone rejoiced in the lull after so many snacks, conversations, and dances. The loud music ceased, and everyone cleaned up. Community members had gone home, but family and closer friends remained on the main floor. On the second floor, Amadeus and Scarlet lay asleep in their bed. A long-standing tradition of The Grand West. As Rosethorn Manor is one of heritage, so must the traditions of a couple sharing a piece of fabric. There was no mention of what the couple had to do, just that they had to stay in it for some nebulous amount of time after the party. The two cuddled on top of the fluffy duvet, fully robed, until Amadeus awoke.
“Scarlet, are you asleep?” He asked. She nodded, her head on his chest. Her dalmaion familiar stretched on the carpet.
“We do this all the time; This bed thing makes no sense.” Scarlet sighed.
“Maybe it was to help couples figure out reproduction, as knowledge back then was not as available?”
“You make it sound so dry, and like our ancestors were stupid.”
“I make it sound like I don’t want to think about it. Because I don’t.” Amadeus said, stretching up, and leaving the bed. Scarlet got up, and ruffled her black and indigo waves into place.
“I’m aware. It’s not like we had to use a medical setting to duplicate. You’re lucky I’m a girl who’s ok with that.” Scarlet said, taking Amadeus hand to head downstairs. Five paces down the hall, Amadeus froze.
“You said that in past tense.” He said staring at Scarlet.
“Yeah,” she winced. “Yeah, I was going to tell you…”
“Are you ok?” Amadeus gasped. He was starting to cry. The good kind. He gasped hugging her. Something he wished for had happened.
“Yeah. As a Heartman healer mage, I like to think I know medical stuff. I have to apologize though.”
“For what?” Amadeus sniffed, standing back for their eyes to meet.
“I, ah, may have felt really unwell before a shift, and drank one of your mom’s potions in the sick room.” Scarlet said. “I’m sorry. I know how important those are to you. I wasn’t thinking right.” She turned away. Amadeus lost his breath, fearing for her life.
“Which one? I know the gifts of my garden, but not what they make. What if you drank something that might hurt you? Might affect our child?!”
“The embryo. Also, it was one I’d never heard of, labelled it as Petal Chill. The description said it was good for my symptoms.” Scarlet shrugged. She summoned the translucent pur bottle. Amadeus held it. It would be a shame not to refill it; The rack was always fully stocked. Why be a manor that can produce any potion, and not have every potion? Made by a keeper, who is poor at making such potions.
“Ah,” Amadeus said with a certain sadness. “I should make more; My mother would think it a shame.”
“A shame that I may have consumed mystic thalidomide early term, with the grandchild she’ll never hold?”
“Well yes. But also, that a bottle of medicine is empty when someone might need it.” He whispered. Scarlet hugged him as he started to shake. “I don’t think I can make it, nor any antidote.” Amadeus broke down.
“You can try? I mean you have stock, and if your mom was making so many elixirs, there’s a cauldron in this house somewhere. Probably a stash of every imaginable recipe book too.” Scarlet rambled.
“Her books are in the lower vault. They made father sad, so I moved them.” Amadeus said. Scarlet quickly propped up her officiated groom with a smile: They get to go to the vault again!
In the main floor parlor, Scarlet and Amadeus let people know they were in the vaults looking for his mother’s recipes. Gemini drank his apple juice, while gazing mid-distance. Talk of his wife’s work, stung his wounds; That were fresher than he’d like to admit.
“Does this mean we get to see the packing room? On the top floor!? There must be several fortunes up there!” Rah asked. “Aunt Plumba never let me in there, and you’d tease me that it was full of insects and dirt.”
“I’ll think about it.” Amadeus smiled, taking Scarlet to the vault.
Twenty minutes later, they emerged with black wood trunk, carved with people carrying things. It wasn’t even locked. The trunk was bought by his grandfather, on vacation to his Southland home-town. Amadeus opened it, to see loved recipe books; Stained, worn, and notes written on the pages. Some of them were so old, Amadeus had to translate them from Ealden Anglian. The party sat on the floor skimming through tables of contents, looking for Petal Chill. His mother had so many books, with such fine print, it turned out to be a worthy challenge.
“Oh! I found it!” Rah gleamed, holding open a small blue plastic binder; The page of loose-leaf, was wrinkled and stained. Written in blue ballpoint pen, that bled into the yellowing paper:
“…Father’s recipe for Petal Chill Olive Oil. A magical, and natural, way to gently cure symptoms of anything you don’t want to cure. Origin: Okoko Greeneholt, Forest of Masks, Bantia…”
Rah recited. “It’s from the Tree Queen himself!”
“Olive oil? Like naturopathy?” Scarlet grimaced. “I drank a good source of Omegas!? You’re joking. Give me that!” She said swiping the note-book. When she reached behind her to pull in Amadeus, she grasped air.
Amadeus checked the frost seal of the greenhouse. His breath was visible in the night, lit by the blue lights of the sleeping dendrons. He silently opened the greenhouse, and eagerly entered the warm humid room. Amadeus ran to the middle area, and crouched to Thula. He examined her velvet white leaves; A characteristic of the rare Winter Peace Olive.
“Hello Amadeus! Congratulations on appeasing Common Folk today!” She giggled. “Do you need more leaves? You have your mothers vile. For that one, I think you need to pick without asking.” She explained. Amadeus starred into her beautiful ruffled foliage, and plucked six leaves. He wondered if mythical shrubs could feel pain.
“Oh no! You look far more troubled then last we spoke early spring. Amadeus, can I help?” Thula chimed. Amadeus combed his worries.
“Hm. Well Thula, did mother ever tell you what she needed the leaves for? Some of your siblings ask how their gifts help humans, and tell us what their magic provides. I’m no Apothecary, and hardly a grounds keeper. I don’t have the knowledge she did. You’re just too rare.”
“Plumba says rare means special! Like you!” Thula continued. Amadeus managed a chuckle.
“Well, when taken, my leaves are extremely calming, and my flowers aid sleep.” She explained. Amadeus leant in closer, like a little boy ready for the jack to pop.
“When requested, my leaves heal children born at night, and petals make ice.” She whispered. Amadeus slumped. The leaves were to supply medicine to schools.
“My mother took folk-cures and potions over medication! My father had to lie when he got us vaccinated! I feared for Scarlet, and you tell me Petal Chill Olive Oil is simply for-”
“No, Oil comes from fruit and seeds stupid. That’s not even regarding fey, that’s mundane knowledge. How do you know so little, while somehow being able to perfectly nurture and protect us?” The flowerbeds taunted.
“Well, Amadeus loves us! Where his friends and family. We fulfill his enfeyment and everything! Right Amadeus?” Thula cooed. Amadeus stood silent and still. But he stirred to a knock on the greenhouse.
“I guess so.” He smiled, turning to leave.
“Wait! I didn’t tell you about my bark and fruit!”
“One minute!” Amadeus yelled. He scurried back over, and knelt to Thulia.
“When taken, my bark makes things feel cold, but when requested it creates reflective pigment. When asked for, my fruit is sweet; And when stolen, it imbues anything with the essence of winter. It’s funny, for all her craftmanship, the place Plumba said she always went wrong, was asking nicely for our gifts. She just didn’t want to cause us pain, and she apologized each time.” Thula explained. Amadeus still felt heavy; Knowing his mother messing up a recipe caused his snowy features, and spells to favour ice, didn’t make him feel a worthy nobleman.
“You knew the whole time? Why I’m enchanted?” Amadeus wilted.
“Yup. You’re enchanted, because The Wolf King enfeyed you with a cat that guards weary travelers while they sleep; So, you can protect your friends and Rosethorn Gardens even better!” Thula glittered. Amadeus fell back onto his seat, looking at her. That’s not what he meant.
Once inside, Amadeus let everyone into the packing room. They became distracted by the haphazard shelves, clutter, dust, disrepair, and cracking floors. There were cauldrons, bottles, papers, mortars, and everything looked like it was purchased at a yard sale. This room had more money moved in and out of it, then anywhere else in the valley. Amadeus gathered the ingredients for the Petal Chill, and put them in paper boxes, tied them with twine, and stamped with his crest. He added a hand written letter, with a copy of the recipe. Amadeus put it all lovingly into one of the embellished teleportation boxes. It clicked shut, making a chime only he could hear. With a gentle smile, Amadeus gave a relaxed sigh. Scarlet starred at the box.
“I’m pretty sure that was thousands of dollars you just evaporated away.”
“Cost of labour. Do you remember the accredited Apothecary from our year? The one who went home to the magic butte of Doi Veng? In the Eastlands? Well, the Whitestead nobles there have a Rosethorn Box.” Amadeus said, resting his head on hers. Scarlet nodded. Qilin had a temper.
“I think he’d like the challenge of refilling the vile I included, better than I ever could. The gifts of my garden are for everyone; Including people who are more competent than me. I am but this abode’s knight.”
“So, you believe us now? That you’re still you, and live your dream by another name?” Scarlet smiled
“No. Not yet, anyway.”
