I've been on the depo shot contraceptive for several years longer than you're supposed to because it manages these symptoms, I had to go off it for a while by doctor suggestion to reassess if I still need it, my period has been back for three days and I'm seeing my doctor TODAY to get back on depo because I just can't handle the physical and emotional toll it takes on me

this shit is genuinely crippling, I cannot function, don't let people convince you that this is normal, listen to your body and get help

i just learned premenstrual exacerbation (PME) is a thing which is like. when your menstrual cycle makes pre-existing conditions worse (especially mental health conditions). i'm starting to wonder if i have either this, PMS, or PMDD... or both PMS or PMDD and PME. (yes ik PMS isn't the same as PMDD, i just dont track my symptoms well enough to know if it's just regular ol' PMS or not)... time to download a period tracker

My experience with PMDD, now that I’ve realized what it is, is visceral in hindsight.

I came to terms with it recently, after years of fighting. It was a week where I went to campus, skipped half my classes, and spent a whole day sitting on a couch in commons staring forward and trying not cry while my chest felt like it was imploding. I couldn’t eat. I could barely breathe. I texted my mom that I was scared, and the next day my period started and I went home and hugged my family and went straight to my psychiatrist.

I spent so much of my life assuming that I had some form of depression, but it was so on and off that it never really counted. I wasn’t sick enough. When it hit me, it burned me like a wildfire, but when it was gone, it was like nothing was there.

So whenever that fire came blazing through my house, I thought I must be losing my mind. Then, I started to realize that these feelings lined up with my cycle. It started to click.

The world tells people with periods that it’s normal to be bitchy or dramatic or hysterical, so even when I noticed the pattern was connected to my cycle, I brushed it aside. I barely knew what PMDD was. I had seen the name on Tumblr though, so I looked it up. And even now I’m scared to tell people because that’s what they assume. They won’t get it.

But good friends will. And good doctors will. And you owe it to yourself, if any of this or what follows sounds familiar, to try and seek help.

Because here is what I know now: I am not irreparably broken. This is real.

And here is what I remember:

I remember one time staring at my friends smiling and feeling such a visceral pain and emptiness that I ran out of the room to take a walk in which I decided to cut myself off from them and drafted a suicide note in my head. And two days later my period started and I went back to those friends feeling completely fine.

I remember sitting on the floor of my room sobbing over feelings that had been triggered by playing a video game, and thinking oh god, these depressive episodes hit me out of nowhere and when they happen I stop seeing a future that doesn’t Hurt, am I going to have to deal with being sick and completely incapable of being a human at random times for the rest of my life? So why do I even try? I made the decision to isolate myself again, because no companionship could possibly fix me. Followed by my period the next week.

I remember breaking down to my friends that I’m irreparably sick because of those random weeks where everything hurts and I become the worst version of myself, then two days later having to sit them down again and say that I was wrong and overreacting. (My period had started).

I remember coming home to see my family many times and lashing out at them. Freezing in the living room when I had to do work and yelling at everyone who tried to help me. I felt pathetic. I felt incapable of taking care of myself at all. I was so so angry. I stopped eating to punish myself. My period would start some days after this.

I remember being in so much distress one week that my friends were scared for me. Getting extensions on all of my finals because I couldn’t do anything but stare at the wall. Finishing performing in a show where I was the lead and breaking down 10 minutes after curtains fell because I couldn’t bring myself to feel proud or believe anyone who said I had done well, and wanting to give up my love of theater forever because what’s the point if it will never make me happy? Will my hobbies ever make me happy? And then my period came.

I can be happy. I’ve changed my meds and my treatment. And having a diagnosis that makes it all make sense has lifted this weight off of my shoulders. It won’t go away, but I know what’s there now. Knowing us half the battle, huh?

So yeah, if this reminds you of yourself, look into premenstrual dysphoric disorder. And I love you — you’ve made it this far, and I know first hand what that means.
