Thoughts On My Practice of Druidry
I was lucky enough to be born and raised in the Pacific Northwest (specifically in the San Juan Islands), one of the few temperate rainforests in the world. We have so many different and useful types of flora and fauna and my home is green all through the year. I'm blessed with this abundance.
It is this abundance that originally made me disagree with the use of "traditional" plants in my practice. I believe Druidry is about the nature that surrounds you. Respecting, loving, experiencing, and nurturing it. The plants I use for different things sometimes even change depending on the growing season.
We don't have the typical seasonal changes. We get deep freezes and snow in February and March, we get high dry summer in late August and September. We measure our season by animals and plants; Tulip season, orca season, Salmon fishing season, Salmon spawning season, black bear season, cotton wood season, trumpeter season (which was really early this year so we knew we were gonna get a good freeze).
My point is that the world around you is rich and interesting and affects you for more than a world from long ago and far away. Respect traditions, but don't feel you need to follow them to the letter.
