It’s over a week into my month of 18th c sewing and I’m already behind but making god progress! I was supposed to finish my undergarments by the 7th but since I can’t finish my petticoat until I get the pocket hoops situated, everything else is on hold until then.
Originally, I was going to make a false rump, and then about 3 seconds before patterning it, I decided to go for pocket hoops instead for a more dramatic look (and also just because I wanted pocket hoops!)
I looked at a few videos and tutorials for making them and decided to go for it. Sometimes this is okay and results in a great end product! So I rushed to finish them without actually taking a step back to really LOOK at the silhouette I’d created. After a fair amount of hand sewing work, including flat felling the seams (ahhhhhh), I then realized I should’ve graded the hoops to make a less cake-topper shape and round out the curve of the skirt (as is, it goes straight out from the high hip then just drops which is not the look I want at all)
So now I’m even more behind because I have to go back, undo my stitches in the hoop channels, cut down the top two layers of bones, then hand stitch a gathering stitch through the backs of the boning channels to gather the fabric down to keep everything situated the way it should.
BUT even though this is a challenge I’d like to make the deadline of, especially given my photography window in Williamsburg, I’m not going to sacrifice quality for it, especially in the foundations!
tl;dr step back and look at your work as you go or you might be kicking yourself later
