and as jonathan van ness would say, you have to find little pockets of joy in your life
I’m just gonna pretend I haven’t watched that video with Darren, Helen, and Arden basically nonstop on repeat today thanks
We should really start living our lives. I don’t mean quitting on the ordinary things and seek extraordinary experiences, but the mundane every day things. So many people go through life going from point A to point B without appreciating the journey. And I mean this in the most simple way possible. Going to the supermarket? Take a chill pill and walk slower, look around you.
Up until recently I never realized how fast i walked until i noticed i was going at a similar pace to this lady out on a run. I had the afternoon completely free, no schedule to follow. So I sat down on a random bench and watched people go about their day. I sat there feeling the wind on my face. Listening to the rustling of leaves above me. And once I stood up, i just kept walking, slower and enjoying the journey. Its so ridiculously simple and so easy to overlook. Its the same route i take every time i go grocery shopping, yet, its the first time I’ve truly enjoyed walking along the sidewalk on my way to buy some stuff. Its funny how the most mundane of activities was the highlight of my day.
Its always just following the timeline society has set for us. Primary -> middle school -> high school -> university -> job -> retire -> die. Maybe get married and have children along the way. Maybe get a pet or two. Perhaps even get to travel somewhere every now and then. But do we leave enjoyment and fulfillment for the milestones. Why cant we start enjoying the little pockets of joy ready to be opened on our day to day life instead of staying miserable in the boring cycle of the everyday shit. It’s surprising. We put happiness on an unreachable pedestal that requires so much to even reach when its hiding in a random alleyway in the form of a kitten waiting for someone to pet them. Its hidden in the sight of strangers laughing on the subway. Its in the satisfaction of a warm beverage on a cold day or a slight breeze on the hot ones.
Im just saying, lets start living our lives correctly before they live on without us appreciating the chance to do so.
2023.05.03 | Never forget to find joy in the small moments. It's what sustains everything when you look at the larger picture.
I’ve just finished reading Illuminations, which came out today. In the bath, as is my way (yes, it was a rather long bath). Around the 90-95% mark, I felt tears running down my face. By the time I was finished, two things became utterly clear. One, is the reason why my NaNoWriMo attempt this year has been going so badly, and not just because I’m in a bad place mentally, physically, and life-wise. It’s because I haven’t been trying to write any kind of truth. When you write the truth, it writes itself, and your words come alive. Second, and completely unrelated, is that I think I know now what I will do in the next phase of my life. This feels like a sign in a series of signs, and all I can do is follow them.
Thank you, Ursula, for bringing me hope and joy and meaning ever since I first came across your blog in the mid-2000s. You are a beacon that lights so many darknesses. Thank you.
