there was a time when poe knew something besides pain and suffering. a time where he was loved by a family and kept warm among the cold plains of canada. in fact, for the first ten years of his life he thrived in their small community where everyone took care of everyone else and they didn’t rely on any large entity for help. he was never made to feel anything but normal. but he wasn’t normal, was he? no, neither were his parents and he would find that out when their community was infiltrated and they were forced from their country to find new refuge.
it was years of travelling, hiding, and eventually making it to the appalachian hills where his mother would bring him to a cabin in the hills. a place that was known as a refuge and someone would be coming to help them settle in the area. his mother didn’t tell him about the person coming to meet them, only that they would help and they just needed to wait patiently. patience was never a virtue poe was able to grasp fully. in the end, it didn’t matter, it was not one person that came to ‘rescue’ them. it was people, maybe soldiers or government workers, faces obstructed as they entered and easily pushed past the twelve year old boy trying to shield his mother from their attack. they were rendered unconscious with needles and taken to underground labs.
the medication didn’t last long in poe’s system, anxiety and panic causing his blood to warm to unnatural temperatures, burning through the sedative and causing his veins and heart to show like burning coal or lava beneath his skin. it was then they realized his mother wasn’t the only one with abnormalities. for months they did their tests until it stopped and a man with kind eyes and rugged edges came and took him away from the place before anymore damage could be done. poe never saw his mother again, not since the night in the cabin. he doesn’t know why the man came for him or how he convinced them to let him go but he was desperate to be free, he wasn’t going to argue.
hungry, hormonal, and scared was where it started and somewhere among the budding teenager’s formative years, that changed to angry and feral. he didn’t bite the hand that kept him fed but even bill couldn’t keep this walking volcano reigned in. instead he learned more about what he was, what he could do, and more importantly, how he could control it. the latter came with much trial and error but eventually poe had some methods in place to live with his inflictions and use them to his benefit when he was able to.
he was seventeen when he lied about his age and started fighting underground, the violence was a new way of giving him calm and peace. there was no one willing to help him go against afterglow, or find out if his mother was still there somewhere needing to be freed. poe could be stupid but he wasn’t stupid enough to think he could take the titan company on alone. in the search for some kind of resistance he found some solace among the ranks of the shamrocks after showing his worth in the ring and among the streets of burnington. they gave him community and in turn, he gave them loyalty, at least until he could find a way to hurt those who hurt those who destroyed his world.
