hey i have a very genuine question for people who identify as a bi lesbian because im very confused

so the main argument i’ve seen for the label is because the persons a woman dating another woman and that because when a stranger would see them the thought is “theres some lesbians” and not that they may be bi, but something that i was curious about is if you were dating a man would you be alright with being called straight/would you id as a straight bi? 

im confused because it feels like the community has worked hard for “dont assume any same gender couple you see is strictly gay” and for like if a character is shown being bi but end up in a same gender relationship that they arent gay/lesbian they’re bi, so why are you guys id-ing as lesbians because of what some ones perception of you may be? like im not asking to be snarky or have a “gotcha moment” i just dont get it and would love to talk to some one who id’s this way about it
