Singing in SJA
It isn’t throwback thursday but everyday can be a throwback day!
Since third grade up to present (well except for my fourth grade), I am fond of joining clubs that enhances my skill in music. Thanks to Angelic Chimes Club, Glee Club, and Performing Arts Club for molding my talent and bringing out the best in me. Thank you to my beloved moderators who served as a motivator and inspiration to me in pursuing my love for music. In today’s blog, I would like to share my experiences about my journey in achieving and claiming my own self.
As said on my first blog, I started singing when I was 2 and a half years old. Despite this, I am a shy kid with a low self-esteem that serves as a constant barrier for me in sharing my God given talent. Through the years, I pushed myself little by little to conquer my fears and get out of my comfort zone. It doesn’t matter if people dislike you or what you do, what matters is that you got yourself and believe in your full potential. Back then and until now, my parents believed in my talent in singing so much more than I do. Maybe because I am confined with the idea that there are other better voices who deserves to be heard than mine. There was this opportunity to join a singing competition when I was in ninth grade, which I turned down because of the fear of not being good enough. Up until today, I still regret saying no to that opportunity. More than singing on stage, more than winning that contest, I regret saying no because I am trapping myself to my own cage without trying to get out and learn more about my capabilities and potentials. I promised myself to never turn down an opportunity again because I believe that every opportunity serves as an open door in order to grow as an individual.
I will now start sharing my singing journey at school. The first time I sang on stage during high school was October 5, 2015 in commemoration of the World Teacher’s Day. It was a duet of the song, “Pangako Sayo” with Psalms Enguero. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo to show for that event because I don’t even have one.
Next, during our Buwan ng Wika 2016, there was a competition per section that should involve writing lyrics regarding nationalism and performing it on stage. As seen in the picture below, that was me years ago wearing a blue dress, performing with my classmates. I cannot remember the title of the song but can perfectly remember the lyrics and its tune. The chorus part goes like this:
“Puwede bang malaman kung ano ang ‘yong nasa isipan?
Nalilito, naguguluhan.
Paano ba maging makabayan?”
Third, I was given an amazing opportunity to sing last September 14, 2016 for the Lord. It was a responsorial psalm and I remembered how shaky I am because it was my first time. Also, I want it to be perfect as possible since the Lord is my main audience. I don’t have a photo of it also, but the psalm goes like this:
“Do not forget the works of the Lord.”
Fourth, I was given another opportunity to sing for the World Teacher’s Day again! It is my delight and pleasure to sing for my beloved teachers who contribute their time and effort to share their knowledge to their students. We sang “Salamat” and “Tuloy Pa Rin” with my dearest batchmates.
On the same day, I performed with the glee club. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the song we sang that time but I’m pretty sure that it was heart warming for our audiences especially for our teachers.
Next on my list, was last year’s Nutrition Month wherein the school held a song and dance interpretation competition. I was the one who wrote the song together with Robert San Pedro who have written the rap part of the song. I am the lead singer and in-charge of the other singers as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t entered the top three and was ranked fourth among eight competitors. It wasn’t a bad fight though.
Next, I sang again on the World Teacher’s Day event with my girls. We sang, “Little Things” by One Direction. It was my third time singing for teacher’s day. Sorry for the low quality photo but at the very least, our performance was high quality. Kinda I guess.
Lastly, I was told to sing the Philippine National Anthem for our promenade which is a first for me.
That’s all for my singing experiences during high school inside the institution. What’s up for me this year? That’s for me to find out.
