Kicking off NATIONAL POETRY MONTH & SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH strong! #StayInAndWrite with us! 3-5pm CDT I'll be facilitating a trauma-informed writing workshop for survivors! The workshop will be in English but all welcome from all time zones! Zoom link in @survivingthemic Instagram bio 💯 Surviving the Mic: Virtually Together is a twice monthly online space dedicated to the perspectives, experiences and artistic expressions of survivors of sexual harm. FIRST & THIRD Thursdays from 3-5pm CST It can be difficult to feel as we have permission to discuss the impact of sexual violence or to even know what resources are still available to survivors during the COVID-19 pandemic, physical distancing that's become necessary in order to protect all of us, and uprisings against violence towards Black people. However, survivors know that the impact of sexual harm knows no limits and may be more deeply felt as people practice physical distancing. Therapeutic practices and other self-care practices may have been disrupted or have become inaccessible. Testimonials - Scribbler (Stan)
“I first came here as a "poet" who had written a grand total of 3 poems. I had no idea if they were any good or if they stank. I was welcomed and received almost immediate positive comments. If my first posted poem had been ignored or perhaps been rudely critiqued I might have well given up on writing poetry. Now, almost 900 poems later I look back on where I was as a writer then and where I am now and the difference is stark. And I owe most of my improvement to this site where Truth abounds in critique as opposed to false flattery which prevails on so many others sites. This honest feedback and the workshops are invaluable in improving skills. During the past 9 years, I have gone through good and bad times. But during these times one of the things that have been constant is Neopoet where I can retreat if need be or share the good times when applicable. This is Indeed a family of poets. Thank you Paul and Andrew.........stan”
The brightest Thing
I want you to know something - That when you are feeling defeated Beat up and down On your luck When you feel like you haven’t done Anything or enough That the most important things in life Cannot be built with your own hands
And even on days you feel burnt out Dim in the darkness Lacking sheen.
I need you to know- You’re still the brightest damn thing I have ever seen.
Baking Bread
I'm very tired
But I want to make.
I will bake honeycakes
In the shape of deer
What do I need?
Sesame seeds, flour, eggs.
To cut them and shape them
I reckon the sharp knife will do.
When I go outside tonight I will find some stones
To knock her down-
Who?
You know, my wife the moon.
I need her light, and some stars too
If I want the deer to taste sweet--
I probably need sugar.
Hazel sighs in a harsh wind
It's branches shift against the unruly bramble,
And flowers curl inward to protect themselves.
In the distance a boat sways on the open sea,
The dark red vision of him heaving seaweed
onto the salty deck is nestled
Under a blooming sky--
Horizon bowed like a spoon tucking away the sun.
How to Read and Write Poetry 12 weeks, Tuesdays, 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. Beginning March 15 2022 **Update: This course will now take place entirely on Zoom.** Curious about reading and writing poetry but mystified by the art form? This course invites students to become more confident reading and writing poetry. Using Susan Holbrook’s book How to Read (And Write About Poetry) as an accessible guide, students will be encouraged to engage with questions such as: What makes a poem a poem? Why can poetry feel so intimidating? We will tackle these questions and more by exploring different poetic forms such as sonnets, ekphrastic poems, haikus, villanelles, sestinas, odes, and concrete poems.
