Point Hope is located near the end of the triangular split in Alaska. This peninsula is one of the longest continually inhabited areas in North America. In Point Hope is a cemetery which is surrounded by large whale bones.

From the Arctic’s Melting Ice, an Unexpected Digital Hub

The receding ice has opened new passageways for high-speed internet cables. Point Hope, a gravel spit in northwest Alaska, is along one of the new routes.

But in a surprising, and bittersweet, side effect of global warming — and of the global economy — one of the fastest internet connections in America is arriving in Point Hope, giving the 700 or so residents their first taste of broadband speed.
