In this story, church was where these women often met: Santa Pudenziana, Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. (After all, church was one of the few places women gathered with less risk of censure.) The devil often lurked among such women in the cautionary images depicting their chatter in church, conveying the threats inherent in women’s idle talk to any who needed reminding (fg. 4). The notorious crimes of [poisoner] Gironima Spana and her companions, this unrivaled threat to patriarchy, surpassed men’s worst fears about the devilish potential of women’s unbridled talk. --Craig A. 24th June 1519, death of Italian noblewoman, governor of Spoleto, and daughter of Pope Alexander VI, Lucrezia Borgia. Despite no actual historical evidence coming to light, Lucrezia Borgia is known to history as a poisoner through the use of a hollow ring to poison drinks, a murdereress, and a commiter of incestuous affairs with her brother. At one such banquet called the ‘ Banquet of the Chestnuts’, held by her father it was claimed that fifty prostitutes were paraded at the end of the meal, for the guests to indulge with including all the members of the Borgia family. Again this banqents’s authenticity is disputed by historians for lack of evidence. Could it be that her reputation was tarnished for the simple fact that a Renaissance woman educated in Latin, Greek, Italian and French, and a daughter of a revilled Pope; her father’s enemies became hers? “FOR THE SAKE OF DECENCY GENTLEMEN, DON’T HANG ME HIGH” - Blandy’s alleged last words. ☠️ Mary Blandy was an eighteenth century English murderer. In 1751, she poisoned her father, Francis Blandy, with arsenic. She claimed that she thought the arsenic was a love potion that would make her father approve of her relationship with William Henry Cranstoun, an army officer and son of a Scottish nobleman. The Blandy case marked the beginning of a wider reliance on and demand for trustworthy scientific tests for detection of poisons. Shortly after Blandy's execution Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-86) developed a postmortem test for arsenic. Her spirit is said to haunt the area centuries later. #poisoners #poisonpath #toxicology #poisoninhistory #famouspoisoners #maryblandy #poisonersapothecary #arsenic https://www.instagram.com/p/CH2-b2kn5Ka/?igshid=1119ndffii13u
