How do you refer to/measure your yarn length?

I live in the UK and yarn is typically labelled in metres here, and when I’m measuring handspun I will measure in metres, but I will refer to it as yardage. Like I will say ‘my yardage for this skein is 250m’. I have no idea why, it doesn’t really make sense, so I’m curious if anyone else does it
