Posting this again because I HAVE MORE TO SAY, and I dont think in my last post I was really able to get across exactly how much weight is in this moment, how much character development has gone into these two characters.
Like, at this point, Higgs has seen Tarvek sacrifice LITERALLY EVERYTHING for Agatha. Heās been shot at, electrocuted, kidnapped, frozen in a time bubble, and stabbed with deadly poison. Heās jumped on terrifying monster clanks, rescued JƤgers from exploding ships, deceived and fought the Other and the Geisterdamen at the risk of his own neck to give her a chance to escape, and allowed her to LITERALLY KILL AND REVIVE HIM. He even gave away the allegiance of the one person in his family (possibly his entirely life) he knew he could trust, in order to allow her to protect the Lady Heterodyne. He sacrificed his sister, his father, his muses, his castle, even potentially his shot at the storm crown, ALL for her. He has put EVERYTHING on the line for this girl, and after all that, Higgs is still holding him at arms length, and he is done. So here he stands, defiant, in front of the most dangerous JƤger the heterodynes ever created, fully aware this man could kill him with ease if given the chance. And he puts that gun to his head and tells him to shoot, tells the most dangerous creature heās ever faced āfuck it. I have given everything for this. This woman, this cause, this family, itās everything to me. I have nothing left to give, nothing left to lose, and I am not going to be treated like an outsider anymore.ā
And I think Higgs sees himself in Tarvek. Higgs has been around for centuries, possibly even a millennia at this point, and for all of that time he has loyally served his Heterodyne. He has taken a sacred oath, and has lost even more than the other JƤgers in keeping it. He is alone. Entirely alone. Separate from the horde, from his fellow generals, from his city, from the woman he loves. Even his Heterodyne, the woman he has sworn to protect with everything he has, the bearer of the crown to which he has dedicated his entire life, the person who his secrecy is all for, doesnāt know who he is. He has sacrificed everything for the Heterodynes, not just his humanity, but his freedom, his very identity. All for the sake of protecting the family to which he has devoted his very being. It means everything to him. He has deceived and spied and sabotaged and observed, and finally, here comes a man who shares that burden, who sees as much as he does, who sees him for what he is, a feat none of the others have come close to. A man who would do anything for his mistress. A man who would die for her, who would kill for her, who would overthrow empires at the snap of her fingers. A true devotee of the cause he has served alone for all these centuries.
At last, here is a man worthy of his Goddessās favor. Last in a line of the most dangerous amoral power hungry cutthroats heās ever seen, able and willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want. Yes, here is a man who will do what needs to be done to protect his lady, whatever the cost to the rest of world.
And so the loneliest monster and the most monstrous of the lonely both knelt at the feet of the Goddess of the Dyne, and Mr. Higgs smiles.
(So anyways they HAVE to be going for a poly triad endgame because at this point I will not accept any other outcomes and I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE FOGLIOS)
