After Robert and I became friends, and he fit so smoothly into my house (lots of laughter and friendly conversation, similar life values, no tension, and similar neatness/cleanliness) I agreed that he and my wife should be boyfriend and girlfriend. We became a MFM throuple. Fourteen months later on October 30, 2025, Robert proposed marriage and my wife enthusiastically accepted, so he and my wife became fiancé and fiancée. No wedding date has been set, though it is possible that they will become husband and wife on September 20, 2026.

That last post about the normativity of monogamy got me thinking: are there any historical states which accepted polyandrous marriages?
Because there are two things that definitely existed. We know of hunter-gatherer societies and other small-scale societies that have highly unstructured relationship structures, where you talk about every man in the village being a father to every child in the village or whatever.
But those aren't states, in the sense where we draw distinctions between states and less-hierarchically-organized non-state polities. E.g. ACOUP gives the definition
“a society with marked social stratification, with a centralized and internally specialized government capable of extending bureaucratic control out into a settlement hierarchy” consisting of multiple (at least usually three; center, regional centers and subordinate communities below them) tiers.
And then we have plenty of states that have normalized polygyny, in the sense that powerful men will have multiple wives (or wives plus formally acknowledged concubines). In this sequence of posts I was curious how Greece, Rome, and Europe developed the norm of formal official monogamy even for the most elite men, since as far as I know most state systems have not had that expectation—though of course in no society has the typical man ever had multiple wives, because counting.
But I can't think of any state system where there was any sort of formally accepted institution of a woman taking multiple male partners. Which would make sense since I don't think I know of any pre-modern states that weren't fundamentally patriarchal. (Again, a lot of anthropology on some small-scale nonpatriarchal polities but I don't know of any actual states that formed nonpatriarchally.)
But I'm also not an expert and my reading here is not very broad or deep outside of Europe, so there could be obvious counterexamples that I'm just not thinking of.

You want multiple yandere knights absolutely cuddling you to sleep. I can provide.
That has unlocked something in my brain I didn't know was there. Please can you provide me this.
“Hehe, so cuddling with yandere knight’s for you, huh? Oh, how devoted they are to you. “Sir Knight” will be used as a title for the Knight’s. Would you prefer an named character?” - Ichor.
Summary - “You are being accompanied by some knights. One is getting cuddly, and then all are.”
TW // Yandere.
You haven’t expected to be in the middle of a cuddle pile of Knight’s. You would have thought they would be too prideful or mighty for that, maybe would have denied you of such a thing, but no. They encouraged it. Swindled you into it. Pulling you down into their armored chest, or at least one of their armored chests before the others would notice.
“Sir Knight?” You question the armored male behind you. Their armor lightly digging into your backside as armor is not the most comfortable thing to lay back upon. “Are you alright?”
They respond with a tried-like hum. Their helmets gently nuzzling into the back of your neck. Their gauntlets sliding over your curves and slotting themselves on your lower stomach. Being bold enough to such a being like you. “Fine… just starved.”
“Starved?” You repeat his words, rising your brows at him. Shifting a bit to be at a more comfortable angle where his armor wasn’t actively curving into your back. “Didn’t you just eat, Sir Knight?”
“I did.” He simply reply’s. His gauntlets softly thumbing at you before dragging you down with him. Exciting a surprised yelp from you while both of your bodies are laid on the blanketed ground. You on top and him on the bottom. Your form twisted a bit as your hands stabilize yourself between his helmet. The glow of his eye looking up at you with something that sends a tingle down your spine. “A knights hunger can be… limitless.”
“Limitless?” You question him again, adjusting yourself on top of him. Your form moving to straddle him properly. Hands moving to the cold metal of his chest-piece to stabilize yourself a bit more comfortably. “I do suppose you all burn it all off after a moments rest.”
“…Yes…we do.” He paused with his words at first before seemingly agreeing with you. Sighing out in content. His armored form relaxing slightly before it was ruined in a second. His form quickly rising up and hugging you close, a squeak leaving you as you're pressed closely to his chest.
“My lady! We heard you- oh.” A group of knight's rush and stand at the ready. Their gauntlets on the pommel of their swords. Ready to slash someone at a moment’s notice. Everyone looking incredibly tense before a knight that was more of a teaser of the group laughs.
“My! I didn’t know it was cuddling time- Ow!”
The sound of metal thunking upon metal echos through out the area. A quiet snort leaving your lips, amused of this situation as these knights have been rather… overprotective of you. You walk anywhere that’s not within their sight? Consider yourself getting practically grouped up on. It scares the people away, but you don’t really mind too much. It was hard enough trying to equalize your attention between 3, much less 12 knights. Any random people? Now that was just too much to add.
“Silly knights.” You smile at them, and something within them flutters. Their forms relaxing slightly at your words. Some grumbling about them, and others simply accepting, but they still have this weird fluttery feeling inside of their chest. “You really think I would be in danger with all of you around?”
“You praise us highly.” Another comments, sighing out. His form moving forward out of the group to settle on the ground next to you on the original knights lap. Both of them sending some telepathic message to one another with their eyes. The original knights moving his gauntlets back down from hugging you to settle on your waist this time. Gathering the keen attention of the others to that particular area upon you. “Perhaps too highly.”
You should have caught that weird tone he had but you chose to focus on being… kind. Your body shifting on top of the original knights lap again while the others decided to come and sit around too. Each one of them eyeing each other beneath their helmets as they settle themselves on the ground too.
“Ah, then what kind of lady would I be?” You question all of them, tilting your head. Unaware of their hidden protectiveness that goes beyond than just overprotectiveness. “One that doesn’t like her knights?”
“…Perhaps…” The original knight responds, his grip tightening a bit on you. Keeping you upon him. “Do you… like us, my lady?”
“Of course!” It was a question you didn’t even think of, clearly, or else you would have noticed their… ways. You would have seen the dried splattered blood upon their cloaks and swords, and heard the word of a few missing people you have gotten to know well of. “Unless you give me a reason not to.”
“Hmm, no.” The knight squeezes at you again before laying back down with you on top once more. A few of the other knights shifting closer, brushing up one another with a soft click of metal in order to get their own touch on you. Their own gauntlets settling gently on you or as close as possible. Some looking like they were in some awkward positions, and some even allowing some cross touching. Their armored forms overlapping. It was almost like some sort of snake ball but with knights.
“That is good.” You nod, slowing snuggling into the knight below you. Your hands extending out to hold some of the knight's own gauntlets, and admittedly? It may look and feel awkward at first, but it was rather cozy they more you and the knights themselves get used to it. The combined body heat escaping their armor acting like some sort of heating pad to you. “You better have a valid reason if you do eventually have one.”
You hand feel their gauntlets tighten on you in response. Squeezing you slightly while you're relishing in the comforting heat they were providing. Some of them getting bold enough to even lay their helmets upon your back, and soon enough? You were in a doze, and the knights? In a trance. They were lucky to have a bit oblivious yet loving lady within their ranks. They hope you would allow them to become something... more, but until then? You're affectionate and praising words shall tempt them.
One thing that's inexplicably on my mind right now is that East Asian royal families were generally historically polygamous, so if you wanted to have Azula or Zuko or King Kuei or some other Fire Nation or Earth Kingdom royal or noble take multiple partners, that would actually be reasonably historically accurate. It seems like the Fire Nation royalty has avoided polygamy in recent decades (or you would expect the royal family to be much, much bigger), but isn't the point at the end of the series that they are supposed to return to old ways?
Interestingly, some of this applies to the Water Tribes as well. Although I don't know nearly as much about this subject as I know about East Asian royalty and I don't want to say anything too confidentially, I know some Inuit groups sometimes practiced polygamy. I also know that some groups sometimes practiced "spouse exchanges" where two couples would temporarily exchange spouses in order to create fictive kinship between them. Although the SWT is not identical to historical Inuit groups and the NWT in particular seems very, very different with it's city and state, I think you could definitely justify polyamory being in the tradition of both Water Tribes.
While the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Water Tribes might have traditions of polygyny (where one man marries multiple women), the Air Nomads might have a very different traditions. They are inspired at least in part by Tibetan Buddhism, and Tibet has it's own traditions of plural marriage. Historically, the most common type was fraternal polyandry, in which two or more brothers would take the same wife. However, apparently polygyny, conjoint marriages, and of course monogamous marriages were also historically acceptable in Tibetan society. Of course, there were specific economic reasons why fraternal polyandry made sense in Tibet, which might not apply to the Air Nomads and we really don't get a sense of how their marriages and family life might look like, but it's another reminder not to force their culture into "Western marriage norms, circa 2007."
With all the various forms of plural marriage that would theoretically be culturally appropriate, I think you can culturally justify just about any form of polyamory you are interested in writing.
I can see Miromabby work as a poly relationship with no conflict depending on Abby and Romance's relationship with each other. As a reminder, poly just means many. Miromabby can also be considered a throuple because it's a romantic ship between three people. It can also be called a polyandry ship because it's a woman, Mira. Who has two male partners or husbands. Abby and Romance.
I did do a Anthropology class a while ago, and I can say polyandry helps control population but also can help mix genes. Meanwhile polygyny is a man with multiple wives boost population faster and mix genes.
An example of polyandry is the practice of Tibetan woman who marry brothers. The brothers already have a strong relationship and she sleeps with all of them. So when she is pregnant either way, she is carrying their genes.
I don't think Abby and Romance are brothers, but I do think they have to have a strong relationship with each other to not cause conflict in Miromabby. I also think it helps if they are bi, so Mira can take breaks from them. I also think Miromabby children being half siblings can also help keep her, Abby and Romance together. The kids have two dads to help take care of them, and it probably helps not knowing who's kid is who's to avoid drama.
So Miromabby can work because Mira likes men and has two hot ones, who in turn have a strong relationship with each other. Them having positive relationship amongst the three of them helps keep things positive in their family.
