Fellow vampires! A miracle has happened!

I was started on Dupixent for my atopic dermatitis (eczema), and a couple of good side effects have come out of it!

Dupixent is also marketed to help with asthma, and mine has been doing much better!

In getting my eczema under control, my PMLE has also gotten better!

I can actually go outside to do things like walk the dog, get the mail, go to the friggin’ car without breaking out! I still use sunscreen for longer exposures and take Heliocare supplements daily, but this is most joyous news!

I made the mistake of going outside without fully covering up (and after not taking my pills for about a month, whoops) and now I have to tear off my skin.

Hi! I noticed your post on heliocare. So over the summer i started to get red spots that would develop on my skin whenever i was in the sun and the stronger the sun and the more time i spend in the sun, the redder it gets all over. It makes me hate myself and hate the sun and i love the summer usually. I feel like ive given up and im only 17. Please help me. Thank you :(

Hi, I’m really tired thanks to two panic attacks within the span of an hour yesterday, so this response may sound special.  Because it is.  But I’mma try.

It gets…better.  I found out in high school and I’ve just taken to making dumb jokes about it and buying stock in Heliocare and Neutrogena.  Points at blog title of “Momma Vampire.”  If you can get it under control with medications and sunscreen, and just watch how long you stay in the sun or make sure there’s some shade nearby, and while you may not be able to enjoy the sun like you used to, you won’t have to sequester yourself indoors all the time.

Okay, that response was terrible and odd, but it does get better, and if you ask me again tomorrow I may have a better response, I’m so sorry.

Okay so I found out I have pmle over the summer, which is lovely as is, but it's worse because I'm super young compared to the average age(as in 16). Any advice?

Oh, dear heart, I found out when I was 15, I know that feeling all too well.  (Bonus, I was in marching band at the time.)

My advice to you is as follows:

Make an investment in Heliocare (link).  It’s marketed as an ‘anti-aging’ thing, but trust me, it works wonders to help with PMLE.  In fact, I believe my dermatologist is the one that recommended it to me.

As far as sunscreens go, I swear by Neutrogena’s Sunscreens with Helioplex (link).  I usually use the sports spray that’s 100 SPF, but I’m also apparently allergic to something in the sunscreen lotions and not the sprays (go figure).  Whatever works best for you out of this line should be fine.

There are SPF treated clothing lines, though I’ve never personally used any.  I generally just stick to a light sweater for the first couple weeks of spring/summer, until the Heliocare has time to work it’s way into your system.

Not an actual thing that’ll help, but humming the Mission Impossible theme song as you dart from shadow to shadow is always a good way to cheer yourself up…at least in my experience.

Hey, howdy, hey, it’s SUMMER!  And you know what that means, fellow vampires!  That’s right, the UV rays can see your skin again!  Now, I know several of you have found several different rays of not bursting to flame upon walking outside (okay...breaking out into a painful rash), but there are still young fledglings out there that have just found out they have this...shit, and need to know a bit more about it.  The above link will explain a bit more about the disease itself while I have a few helpful tips I would like to share.  If there are others that wish to share their tips, please feel free to do so!  These are just the best ways I’ve found for me!

Do you already have a reaction from the sun?

Calamine lotion, aloe, or an anti-itch cream with hydrocortisone in it is your best bet.

Aveeno and Neosporin both make anti-itch creams with hydrocortisone, it’s marketed for eczema, but trust me, it works for the PMLE reactions.

Not sure if it’s a bad sunburn or PMLE reaction?

The above link should help, but if it doesn’t, I highly recommend Neutrogena’s sunscreens with Helioplex.  I personally use the sweatproof sports spray with 100+ SPF, but that’s just my preference.

Do you know you have PMLE and just need a better way to deal with it?

For that, I recommend Heliocare as a daily supplement.  It takes a few weeks for your system to build it up, but it’s great so you don’t have to worry about getting a reaction while you run outside to get the mail or something.  Of course, if you’re going to be outside for prolonged periods of time, it is always a good idea to put sunscreen on.

While the Heliocare is building up in my system, I usually wear a light sweater for the first few weeks of spring/summer, just to protect my arms a bit better, but that’s just me.

Side note, I do not work for Neutrogena or Heliocare, I have just found their products work best for me.  And, also being allergic to most sunscreens, Neutrogena is the only one I’ve found that doesn’t give me an allergic reaction.
