Head canon that Vulcan females experience pon farr only when it is triggered by an external element. For example; telepathic contact with a male Vulcan in pon farr, or, such as in T’pols case, exposure to a virus/bacteria that affects the endocrine or nervous systems.
The meaning of "Pon Farr" in Vulcan
So in the Vulcan language, "farr" is an ancient/poetic word, no longer in common use, meaning "time"; and most sources state that the meaning of the word "pon" has been lost because the word is too ancient. Fair enough.
Today I was looking up something unrelated in the dictionary and found this:

According to this the meaning of "Pon Farr" is the "time time".
The time of... timing.
The timey time.
