Oops - a member of the Parliamentarian garrison of Pontefract Castle finds himself being locked up in his own dungeon! Not every siege during the English Civil War was broken with brute Force - Royalist plotters managed to infiltrate and take over Pontefract Castle without bloodshed by pretending to be delivering a shipment of beds, then swiftly surprising the garrison. Held prisoner by the Royalists, Robert Brear carves his name on the wall of dungeons at Pontefract Castle in 1648, using his belt buckle and the light of a single candle. The network of dungeons – hollowed out of the bedrock 35 feet below the castle - were used as a prison when Royalists surprised the castle's garrison at the outbreak of the second English Civil War. Pretending to deliver a consignment of beds, the men of disaffected New Model Army colonel John Morris seized the stronghold in anticipation of a national Royalist uprising. The sporadic revolt failed to take hold, and garrisons and towns that declared for the King were crushed. . Brear is the only person ever known to "escape" from Pontefract Castle, asking if he could take a couple of days to sort out some private affairs. Amazingly, Morris agreed and Brear fled.
