Whumptober day 7— Shaking hands

This is the last one (except for a couple later days) I truly had planned out so expect them to decrease in quality from now on XD

His hands won’t stop shaking.

Legend breathed in carefully as he kneeled by the stream near a little ways away from the campsite, looking down at the quietly flowing water.

Hyrule was fine. Warriors had patched him up and declared him okay. The fairy had healed him and Hyrule was fine so why—

Legend’s breath caught and he shoved his hands in the water, furiously scrubbing at the blood caked on them. If he focused on cleaning it’d keep his mind off the thoughts that threatened to overwhelm him, and this was what he’d come here to do anyway.

He watched the clear water below him get stained red as he scrubbed, the smell of it tickling his nose as he picked blood out from under his nails.

His hands were still shaking.

His breath stuttered again, and Legend raised his now-soaking hands up, watching rusty-colored droplets fall down into the stream. Watched Hyrule’s blood fall into the stream, still coating his hands even after Legend had so desperately tried to keep it inside of him as he’d screamed for a fairy—

Something crunched behind him and Legend whipped his head around.

Hyrule stood a few feet away, practically swimming in a borrowed tunic, probably Twilight’s based on the size. His face was pale, bangs hanging a bit limply over his forehead, and Legend jolted towards him before abruptly stopping himself.

His hands continued to shake.

“You shouldn’t be up,” Legend said in a thick voice, managing to speak without his voice shaking. “You need rest.”

Footsteps crunched in the fallen leaves again, and Hyrule quietly walked forwards, settling himself down next to Legend’s spot on the bank with a wince.

“I just wanted to stretch my legs,” he said, shakily dipping his bare feet into the water. “And Time knows I’m here.”

Legend let out a harsh laugh. “And what if you’d passed out walking here? What good would that have done?”

“Legend, I can walk to a stream without keeling over,” Hyrule said, looking over at him.

Legend finally met his gaze, and they stared at each other for a couple moments, Legend’s blue eyes meeting Hyrule’s greenish-browns. His successor seemed to study him, and then his eyes flickered down to where Legend was clenching his fists, trying to quell the shaking that wouldn’t leave him.

Then he gently took Legend’s hands in his, guiding a shaking palm to his wrist.

“I’m okay Legend,” he said softly, moving Legend’s fingers to his pulse point. “I’m alive.”

Legend clutched at it, feeling the steady thrum of Hyrule’s blood against the pads of his fingers. A healthy pulse, full of life, one that pumped blood through his body instead of spilling it out onto an unforgiving forest floor.

“You weren’t,” Legend said thickly. “For a long time.”

Too long.

He shuddered in a breath, and Hyrule squeezed his hand.

“I felt you die,” Legend trembled out, the shaking in his hands beginning to spread to the rest of his body. “Your heart stopped and you weren’t breathing Roolie, for a full two minutes—“

Legend choked off and Hyrule carefully pulled him into his arms, resting his head on his shoulder.

“I’m okay Legend,” Hyrule whispered, his own voice trembling a little. “I’m okay. I swear I’m okay.”

“That’s not the point,” Legend choked out, squeezing his eyes shut. “You were dead. We thought we’d lost you, I thought I’d lost someone else Roolie I can’t keep doing this—“

A tear escaped down his cheek, and Hyrule put a hand on his head, pulling him close until it was resting against his chest. He gently turned it so that Legend’s ear was over his heart, and didn’t say anything when the veteran let out a noise suspiciously like a sob.

“Listen to it vet, just listen to it for a minute,” Hyrule whispered into his shoulder, and Legend breathed in a hiccuping breath.

He screwed his eyes shut and focused on the steady thud against his ear, just the smallest bit weaker than normal. But it was steady, and alive, unlike an hour ago when there’d been nothing but cold silence and endless blood.

Hyrule was still holding his shaking hands.

“There was so just much blood,” Legend whispered into his arm, and Hyrule clutched him a little tighter. “You were nearly in two pieces, I haven’t seen that much since my uncle—“

Legend breathed in a shuddering breath, trying desperately not to completely lose it.

“I’ve lost too many people Hyrule,” he said quietly, voice thick. “And you were almost another one.”

Hyrule sighed and tightened his hold, wincing just a bit.

“But you didn’t,” he replied eventually. “I’m here, and I’m okay vet.” He pulled back and looked Legend in the eye, his own damp with tears. “And that’s what matters. I’ll say it as many times as you need.”

Legend let out a self-depreciating laugh. “Here you are trying to comfort me, even though you’re the one that got mortally wounded.”

Hyrule gave him an exhausted smile, and flicked some more tears off of Legend’s cheek.

“True. But I already had my freakout, it’s your turn for some comfort,” he teased a bit shakily. “Dying may be terrifying, but watching it happen is no better.”

Legend felt his throat close up and he swallowed, breathing in a breath that sounded suspiciously like a sob.

“Don’t ever do that to me again,” he choked out, and Hyrule pulled him in tight again, as Legend let his tears fall.

That’s where Time found them an hour later, the two of them quietly dozing in each other’s hold. Time let out a heavy sigh at the sight of the tear tracks staining both their cheeks, and as he walked forwards to wake them, he noticed Legend’s hand still pressed to Hyrule’s wrist.

It was still shaking, just a bit.

sometimes, miriam's harry and aaliyah's harry just start introducing themselves as their respective girl's partners. because people know aaliyah and miriam more. the harrys are just the ones that tag along with expressions that clearly say i do Not want to be here

"nice to meet you, i'm harry."

"who?"

"the one who's provided the music for this evening, as you requested."

"who?"

"my butler hand delivered the sheets of music that are currently being played."

"who?"

"...i'm aaliyah's husband."

"oh! yeah yeah i know you. should have just said so. yeah she said she'd bring you. don't think she told me your name..."

"both are names are on the invitation."

"funny that."

or

"hi i'm harry."

"what?"

"you're friends with miriam so i thought i'd, um, say hello."

"how do you know miriam?"

"i'm...i'm her boyfriend."

"oh. OH! you're harry! should have just said so."
