I feel like ilyas shame comes into full force when he’s dealing with Shane. Shane’s super sweet, earnest, genuinely cares about ilyas feelings and wants to get to know him more like what’s wrong with him. He can deal with the media hating him, his opponents, his family literally hating him, but he honestly feels the worst when he’s hurting Shane. I think the famous my winning bathroom scene in Vegas shows what Ilya thinks and does when he suspects he’s gone too far.
i think shane was like, designed in a lab to both give ilya what he so desperately needs AND to scare the shit out of ilya. shane is just like... peak Guy Who Wants To Be Loved. Guy Who Would Love Having a Boyfriend. guy who craves intimacy, affection, steadiness, and mutual trust. guy who wants to be known and cherished for who he really is rather than who others expect him to be. i think it is sooo emotionally healing for ilya to be that guy, and we see so many times how his natural, instinctive response is to read what shane needs from him and give it to him. shane needs comfort? ilya comforts. shane needs reassurance? ilya reassures. shane feels uneasy about something and needs someone to tease him so he can make a lame-ass chirp back and feel better? ilya teases him and immediately defuses whatever tension shane was feeling. when ilya is actually allowing himself to meet shane's needs he is the best and silliest and most loving/playful version of himself. shane is a guy who wants to have a loving boyfriend and ilya is a guy who wants to be a loving boyfriend because it's an opportunity to rewrite the dysfunctional relationship patterns of his childhood and begin to heal his deeply rooted emotional trauma etc etc.
but HOO BOY!!!! shane also scares the shit out of ilya!!! and the deeper they get into their relationship (moving from just-sex surface level stuff to something more) the more scared ilya gets. the second he lets himself think about what he's doing with shane instead of just operating on instinct he freezes up. the closer they get the more terrified ilya feels and the more he reacts by pushing shane away. it's just the animating certainty of shame!! if i let you close enough to love me, you will see me for what i really am (irresponsible, lazy, devoid of integrity, damaged, unwanted, unloved and unlovable, etc). and then you will obviously recoil from me and withdraw your love from me forever, and that might kill me. so to prevent this from happening i will keep you at arm's length. but of course that sudden emotional withdrawal is SO painful to experience from the other side! when ilya starts self-protectively stonewalling it HURTS shane! ilya telling shane they're not anything in sochi. ilya ghosting shane for six months after having penetrative sex with him for the first time. ilya fucking shane on his hands and knees in vegas so shane can't ask to be kissed, then freezing him out afterwards. ilya casually telling shane about all the beautiful women he can and does sleep with, all of whom are so much easier and more convenient than shane. you can SEE how much each of these little moments hurts shane (hudson williams the emotions you're able to convey with just your eyes...). and then i think seeing how much he's hurt shane just confirms ilya's inner shame narrative for himself: see? i'm a piece of shit. i'm an asshole. i hurt the people who get close to me. it's better for him to know that upfront. it's better for him to know that the only thing i can offer him is sex. idk god i'm just OBSESSED with how they each experience the horrible stomach-churning push-pull of ilya's avoidant behaviors!!! and i think you are so right that ilya feels the worst when he's hurting shane because like, ilya KNOWS he's hurting him and he KNOWS shane has done nothing to deserve it and he KNOWS it's his fucking fault for approaching shane in the first place and then not being able walk away for good. and it is all made one million times worse by ilya's very strong sense that shane is a good person (unlike ilya) who deserves to be loved and taken care of (unlike ilya) and should be with a partner who is worthy of his trust (not ilya). ouch. OUCH!!!
Consider the Pike kids being from the generation that is more aware of neurodivergence and them clocking Shane's autism when no one else ever thought abt it.
Shane talking abt his experience with smth and one of the kids comes over, pats him on the back "It's okay uncle Shane, my friend from class is autistic too!" And just walks away.
Redone the Winter Olympics husbands. 🥰
"I'm your hell, I'm your dream..."
Shane had an interesting taste in music, according to his husband. He couldn't tell you what was in the charts or trending or whatever, but the songs that he knew- he loved.
Ilya’s husband was currently swaying along to his playlist in their kitchen as he washed the dishes, clad in joggers and a worn soft t-shirt that had been Ilya’s once upon a time. Ilya teased him all the time for doing the dishes by hand instead of using their expensive dishwasher, but Shane was adamant that he got them cleaner himself.
Ilya surreptitiously brought his phone up to look like he was innocently scrolling, but was in reality sneakily recording his husband.
"I can understand how you'd be so confused
I don't envy you
I'm a little bit of everything all rolled into one"
Shane was gearing up for the chorus, drumming out the beat on the side of the sink before loudly proclaiming:
"I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother,
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint,
I do not feel ashamed!"
Ilya grinned widely and snorted out a laugh as his husband nodded his head along to the music, but turned around to glare at his husband when he saw he was recording.
"ILYA!! Don't you dare post that!"- Shane snapped out before the recording ended.

Rose Landry and her brothers while playing cards with Shane one nice evening: Shane, remember Sochi 2014? What a time huh?
