Mrs. M's Popcorn Wagon sat on Downer Ave. across the street from the Downer theater selling popcorn for five cents a bag and penny candy of every variety imaginable. It would close up every fall, a huge tragedy to the local schoolkids, myself included, who would stop there on the way home from school to spend their allowance on penny candy. A nickel went a long way back then. When they closed, the sign on the front would exhort us to watch for the first robin, which was when they would reopen for spring. Over the winter, we had to depend on the Benjamin Franklin across the street for our sugary fixes. Nothing there was under two cents. :(
