On This Day In History . 5 January 1531 . The Pope wrote to king Henry VIII forbidding him to remarry . . ◼ Pope Clement VII wrote to Henry VIII forbidding him to remarry, & threatening him with excommunication if he took matters into his own hands & disobeyed Rome:- . “At the request of the Queen, forbids Henry to remarry until the decision of the case, & declares that if he does all issue will be illegitimate. Forbids any one in England, of ecclesiastical or secular dignity, universities, parliaments, courts of law, &c., to make any decision in an affair the judgment of which is reserved for the Holy See. . The whole under pain of excommunication. As Henry would not receive a former citation, this is to be affixed to the church gates of Bruges, Tournay, & other towns in the Low Countries, which will be sufficient promulgation. Rome, 5 Jan. 1531.” (LP v.27). . ◼ Henry VIII sought an annulment of his marriage to Katharine of Aragon so that he could marry his new love, Anne Boleyn. Treaty of Barcelona Restores Imperial–Papal Alliance

On June 29, 1529, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Pope Clement VII signed the Treaty of Barcelona, ending years of bitter conflict between the Holy Roman Empire and the Papacy. The agreement followed the devastating Sack of Rome in 1527, when imperial troops captured and plundered the city, leaving Pope Clement VII politically weakened. Through the treaty, the Pope recognized Charles V's authority in Italy, while the Emperor pledged to restore papal territories and protect the Church.

The Treaty of Barcelona paved the way for greater stability in Italy and strengthened the alliance between the Emperor and the Papacy at a time of growing external threats. A key objective was to unite Christian powers against the advancing Ottoman Empire, whose military campaigns under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent posed an increasing danger to Central Europe and the Mediterranean. The agreement also set the stage for Charles V's coronation as Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Clement VII in Bologna in 1530—the last imperial coronation ever performed by a pope.

POPE CLEMENT VII

Pope Clement VII was FLoritine/Italian. He wasn't the first Medici to rise to Pope. He was brought up by his uncle Lorenzo the Magnificient and was raised alongside his cousin, who would become pope. During his time in power, Rome was sacked in 1527, by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and Clement was kept as a prisoner. He was pope during the time when King Henry VIII of England was attempting to get a divorce from his wife Catherine of Aragon. Today Clement is remembered as the last Renaissance people who was a patron of Michelangelo and Raphael.
