Containerization, begun in the 1950s, quickly transformed the industrial waterfronts of the region. All along the Hudson River, East River, and most of the New York Bay, piers and docks were omnipresent. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey City, Hoboken, Staten Island, and elsewhere had busy and vibrant industrial waterfronts (as well as more ferry service, prior to the construction of bridges and tunnels). New intermodal, standardized containers, which did not require loading and unloading, and could be more seamlessly shipped via ship, rail, and truck, required fewer workers and larger container facilities. Today, the NY Cruise Terminal is the only remaining Manhattan location for large ships (other cruise terminals are in Brooklyn and Bayonne); the US Army Corps of Engineers forced the City to blast through Manhattan schist, rather than lengthen piers further into the Hudson River (Chelsea Piers, where the Titanic was supposed to dock, was also built over dug-up landfill which had once extended Manhattan to 13th Avenue). #portnewarkelizabeth #marineterminal #portnewark #portelizabeth #newarknj #elizabethnj #nj #ny #panynj #nyc #nyharbor #containerterminal #port #dock #pier #freight #industry #waterfront #supplychain #bayonnebridge #panamax #expressrail #conrail #csx #ns #railroad #containerization #intermodal #shipping https://www.instagram.com/regionnyc/p/CYAVqdwsrLg/?utm_medium=tumblr
Originally a wetland, Newark Bay as well as the Arthur Kill and Kill van Kull were massively dredged and turned into an industrial waterway. There were similar plans for Jamaica Bay in Queens, mostly now a NPS wildlife refuge except for JFK Airport, to be the main shipping facility for the metropolitan region. But without a freight railroad tunnel underneath the harbor, the facility made more sense in NJ, connected with ease to the national freight railroad network and not as isolated as Long Island. #portnewarkelizabeth #marineterminal #portnewark #portelizabeth #newarknj #elizabethnj #nj #ny #panynj #nyc #nyharbor #containerterminal #port #dock #pier #freight #industry #waterfront #supplychain #bayonnebridge #panamax #expressrail #conrail #csx #ns #railroad #containerization #intermodal #shipping https://www.instagram.com/p/CYAU_nlOtJT/?utm_medium=tumblr
Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal is the largest container port in the eastern US. The largest of all the Port Authority of NY and NJ's container terminals, this facility in Newark Bay (in Newark and Elizabeth NJ) is conveniently located near Newark Airport, the NJ Turnpike, Northeast Corridor, and many freight railroad lines. If you live in the Eastern US, it's very likely your goods arrived here. #portnewarkelizabeth #marineterminal #portnewark #portelizabeth #newarknj #elizabethnj #nj #ny #panynj #nyc #nyharbor #containerterminal #port #dock #pier #freight #industry #waterfront #supplychain #bayonnebridge #panamax #expressrail #conrail #csx #ns #railroad #containerization #intermodal #shipping https://www.instagram.com/p/CYAT_LOOAdL/?utm_medium=tumblr
The container ship Marco Polo with the length of the Empire State building is seen under the Bayonne Bridge, New York Harbor and Newark/Elizabeth Port early Thursday. The Marco Polo is the largest cargo ship to call on the East Coast and its massive size is comparable to the length of about five Manhattan city blocks, or 1,300 feet by 176 feet. The ship is just slightly smaller than the Ever Given, the container ship that got stuck in Egypt's Suez Canal in March. The ship operated by CMA CGM Group, a French transport company, came from southeast Asia through the canal and it's here to unload up to 5,000 TEUs which contain clothing, pharmaceuticals, furniture, appliances, holiday decorations, building materials, home fixtures and food, according to Port Authority.
