Maria Ursula d'Abreu e Lencastro - Daring adventuress

Maria Ursula (1682-1730) was born to a wealthy family of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1700, she fled from her home to escape mariage to a man she disliked. Dressed as man, she enlisted on a warship bound for Lisbon under the name of Baltasar de Couto Cardoso. There, she volunteered for an expedition to India.

Maria Ursula distinguished herself in several battles. She took part in the attack on Ambon and was promoted to the rank of captain. In 1703, she was named governor of an important castle and, in 1704, the fortress Madre de Deus was entrusted to her. Between 1705 and 1706, she courageously served in the campaigns against the Bhosles of Sawantwadi. Maria Ursula spent 14 years in male disguise and accomplished many exploits.

She then rescued captain Alfonso Teixeira Arrais de Melo e Mendonça as he was in danger of being killed or captured by the enemy. Maria Ursula was injured in the process and her sex was thus revealed. She married captain Alfonso after her recovery and they had a child together. Maria Ursula was granted two palm-groves as a reward for her services and spent the rest of her days there with her family.
