Bad Religion - I Want to Conquer the World

This isn’t the first song I put on one of these mixes, I’m not sure what is but I think it was ‘The Ocean’ by Led Zeppelin, and I’ll eventually figure that out, but this is the first track on the first CD I put in my car, so here we are.

It’s sort of fitting that this is where this thing starts, because I first heard this song on a mix CD that my brother made, and it may have been the first Bad Religion song I heard. It’s also interesting because it was only just a few days ago that I sat down and thought I could probably learn the intro solo to this song, so it’s a song that been booping around in my head for over a decade.

I said in the last post that this was a band that I loved but don’t really listen to anymore. I think that Bad Religion is a great band that has been remarkably consistent while also being willing to stray from the formula just enough to make things interesting. I think in the last decade they’ve made some of their best music, but I think this record, and this song, are the keystone of all Bad Religion. It echoes back to the earlier versions of the band and sets the template for everything that comes after. With all that being said, I’ve listened to all the Bad Religion, I know what the band does, and I like it, but it’s not something I find myself putting it on anymore. If it comes up on shuffle, I’ll enjoy it, but I’m not listening to Suffer or The Empire Strikes First front to back anymore. The same goes for almost all of the Punk of my youth, I still like it, but I can’t really get behind Greg Graffin giving all the idiots a brand new religion in the same way I was in my 20s.
