Has Owen ever had doubts over his relationship with Claire; how does Claire react to that

Yes and no.

Therewasn’t a second in his life when Owen doubted his feelings for Claire or hisdesire to be with her, but there were quite a few moments, particularly in thebeginning of their relationship, when he had certain concerns about theviability of their relationship. He’d learned early on in his life that simplywanting something, no matter how badly, wasn’t always enough for the things towork out. Their relationship had a rather unorthodox start, to put it mildly,and he wondered quite a few times whether or not they’d end up together at allif it wasn’t for the incident and everything that happened afterwards. Theyjumped from ‘getting to know each other’ smack into living together, they’dsept with one another before they knew what their favourite books and movieswere and how they took their coffee.

Naturally,Owen couldn’t help but find himself thinking on more than one occasion if thisbackwards development was going to backfire eventually, waiting for months forClaire to realize that she’d made a mistake. He didn’t think he wasn’t goodenough for her so much as that he simply wasn’t enough. Her life before him was drastically different from whathe’d stepped into. It wasn’t just about them getting to know each other, butalso about them learning new things about themselves in the face of the changesthat they were forced into. Owen couldn’t remember much of his civilian life,Claire hadn’t been unemployed since right after college, and the fact thatneither one of them was in a serious relationship for a while didn’t exactlyhelp the matters.

And themore he fell for her, the more scared he became of losing her, which led to himpulling away from her in an attempt to soften the blow, half-expecting her todrop the bomb any moment.

Clairefound him one night in the living room, sitting in the dark and staring out thewindow, completely lost in thought, and it frightened her. After the incident,he was prone to insomnia, but most of the time he couldn’t bring himself to leaveher, often finding comfort in her presence. And she wasn’t obtuse, too. She’dnoticed the change in him, however subtle, and she couldn’t help but feel morethan a little alarmed. Part of her expected him to brush it off, push her away,but when she stepped toward him, his name on her lips, Owen pulled her into hislap, his instinct to shelter and protect her taking over without him evennoticing.

He told hereverything then, every fear and concern he was carrying inside him, which wassomehow easier to do when he was holding her and his voice was barely a whisperin the dark. Claire admitted that she was scared too, but more scared of losinghim than trying. She knew she would always regret it if she didn’t at leastgive them a chance. He was nothing like anyone she’d been with before, and itwas terrifying in its own way. She completely understood where he was comingfrom – the stakes were rising with every kiss and every moment they spenttogether. And yet it didn’t make her any less excited about what was comingnext. She couldn’t promise him that everything would be sunshine and rainbowsbetween them. No one could. But the one thing she knew for a fact was thatthere was no risk of her ever losing interest in him.

She fellasleep soon afterwards, curled into him in that old chair, with Owen’s armslocked around her as he listened to her breathing grow deeper, and damn if it wasn’tworth it.
