I just think that more people would send each other postal mail if they realized it costs less than a dollar to make your friend open their mailbox and see a drawing of a cat licking its butt
I learned something today that I would like to have known for the past sixteen months. It is one of those things that should be mentioned by the grief counselors of a hospice either in person or via a well written " Practical Things to Know on the Death of a Loved One."
This one involves the U.S. Postal Service and mail. If you receive addressed to a deceased person. In this case, it was a PAC letter addressed to my mother. You could, of course destroy it. Or deal with it by attempting to contact the sender and get the deceased person's name off of their lists. This can work for legitimate businesses, though they may require a copy of the Death Certificate. For everyone else, this is not a good idea.
I should mention that the Bereavement Coordinators (their actually job title) and the lawyer for her estate did tell me about how to handle the various companies, but not cases like this.
So what you do, according to the Postal Official at the Post Office is to cross out the name and address of the recipient, and off to the side write Deceased and ANK (Address Not Known, See Example Below). Again, this is for legitimate business, including mail order catalogs, magazine subscriptions, etc. For scammers, well, this may just encourage them to attempt identity theft. The third category are Not-For-Profits. The USPS tends to simply trash (recycle) Returned Mail from Not-For-Profits, and the Non-Profits are, apparently, under no obligation to remove names (living or deceased) from their mailing lists. Especially if they are Political Action Committees during an election cycle. But you can try.
When People Say “I’m Not on Facebook”
When People Say “I’m Not on Facebook”
What they really mean is they’re not keeping tabs on what you’re up to online, and it’s likely because they’re leading busy lives themselves, where checking up on you is not at the top of their priority list. These comments only come from friends or family, so of course they’re not completely out of the loop. They know the kind of person you are as well as the kind of work you engage in. They’re…

National Thank a Mailman Day
National Thank a Mail Carrier Day
This day is also known as Thank a Mailman Day. It is held annually on February 4. I am not sure how or when this day got started. But, go out there and thank your mail carrier for what they do!
If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be able to get our mail.
Make sure you tell them thank you. You could personally tell them. Put a note in the mailbox…

Mail When On Vacation
US Postal Service Informed Delivery
The US Postal service is offering a new service that will prove handy when you’re on vacation. The service is called Informed Delivery. If it’s available at your address, you can sign up to get daily emails that include images of mail heading to your mailbox. This service works when you place your mail on hold as well.
Using Informed Delivery While on Vacation
If you plan to be away for a week and place your mail on hold, you’re bound to find a stack of mail when you get home. You’ll walk in the door with your suitcases and quickly shuffle through the pile of mail. It will be easy to miss that important once-a-quarter bill as you’re distracted by all the hub-bub. But the pile is laid down so that you can unpack and get back to life as usual. Soon the late payment reminder notice with the additional late fee will arrive. That’s when you’ll realize you missed one envelope in your post-vacation haste. It’s most likely still in the pile that you never went through again!
When you’re signed up for Informed Delivery, you’ll get an email every day new mail arrives at your registered address. While on vacation, you’re probably checking your email anyway. If you notice that bill, you can add a reminder to yourself to check for it when you get home. It’s one less hurried task you need to address as you transition from vacation mode to everyday-life mode. It won’t matter that you’re surrounded by open suitcases, new groceries to put away and piles of laundry.
Let the Mail Pile Grow
With one less thing to worry about when you get home, you’ll truly have more enjoyment staying at our Beach Delight vacation rental in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. We’re accepting Fall 2018 through Spring 2019 reservations now!
