Beth: [age 13] "This is really good, with all these layers."

Wife: "I think any food with layers is good. If you have to take the time to put all those layers in, you know it's going to be yummy."

Me: "Huh. I never thought about it that way."

Beth: "Like baklava."

Me: "Or tiramisu."

Beth: "All kinds of layered cakes."

Wife: "It doesn't have to be flat layers, either, or dessert. Like stuffed chicken, or beef braciole."

Me: "Lasagna."

Beth: "Sushi."

Me: "Seven-layer dip."

Wife: "See?"

Me: "I guess if you're going to take all that time to make something, you're going to want to do it right."

Wife: "Exactly."

Beth: "I don't know... there's got to be some layered thing that we think is awful."

Me: "Hmmmm. The food I don't like isn't usually layered. Like mincemeat pie. Just because it has a crust doesn't really count as layered, I think."

Wife: "But there are pies with layers. Like anything with meringue."

Me: "Yeah, that's a whole lot of extra work."

Beth: "I'm still not sure there isn't something out there."

Me: "You're not allowed to invent a new layered food just to create something disgusting that proves the rule wrong."

Beth: "Darn it."
