Fried red snapper fillets with umami Prawn Rolls or hei zho (虾枣), stir-fried cabbage with minced pork & roasted pork and a trio of fishcakes for dinner. The skin of the fish is crispy and crunchy yet the flesh remained succulent. Added a small scoop of the crispy anchovy’s chilli paste to give it a spicy kick.
炸虾枣 (Prawn Roll) - Hae Zor
When for an appointment in the morning and it ended early so I proceed to the nearby coffee shop to have my brunch at the Economy Rice (菜饭) stall. From the numerous dishes on display, I chose crispy prawn rolls (虾枣), chicken & black fungus and stewed potato slices to go with rice.
On the way to the MRT train, I spied on the gorgeous confections at Paris Baguette and couldn’t resist the temptation to not eat dessert. Gotten the Blueberry Yogurt Tart (S$9.50) which is topped with glazed blueberries 🫐 and red chocolate pearls. The light purple yogurt mousse is tangy sweet with marbling of blueberry compote and the sponge cake gave it substance.
A little bits of this and that plus a fried egg and I have made myself a Gua Bao (刈包) or lotus leaf bun sandwich. The char siu are leftovers which mum reheated and the prawn rolls are from this morning trip to the economy rice stall.
My Brunch came from both land and sea. From land, you get the omelette and curry chicken drumstick. Though not apparent at a glance, the Hei Zho (虾枣) or Prawn Roll is made with prawn as one of the ingredients.
We are back to support the Vegetarian Rice (斋饭) stall at Sun Plaza and coming back home with these two packs of dinner. Not sure what the dish on the left in the first picture is but should be some form of mock meat with gravy. Then there are also curry vegetables 🥬 (mainly cabbage) and preserved Chinese mustard (梅干菜). For the next pack, we have curry mock meat with mock roasted chicken made of bean curd skins and the same preserved vegetable as the former.
Sis also bought some Ngoh Hiang (五香虾饼) which is not vegetarian by the way. Sorry, but I have no idea what the individual items are called so we will just refer to them as prawn rolls and sausages. 😁 These came with chilli sauce (not shown) so you dip and eat.
This Prawn Rolls (五香虾枣) is part of the online bundle we bought from Gim Tim (锦珍酒楼). Boasting crispy bean curd skin wrapping, these bite-sized nuggets with decent pork & shrimp filling are good as a standalone snack or to accompany the rice.
For dinner, mum also prepared Poached Pork Belly with a drizzle of soya sauce. Next dish is the Stewed Bean Curd with minced pork and tomato. And finally, stir-fried long bean with garlic and a little of our home-made chilli paste.
Serve hot rolls with tamarind chutney and tomato ketchup.
