In the months following 9/11, I had an early tip that the Football Association and the MoD were planning to set up a “game of unity” In Kabul between an ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) team and Kabul FC. I passed this news onto my diary editor who clearly didn’t expect me to be given the assignment. An hour later the Picture Editor called me to tell me I was going. So, in February 2002 I boarded a Hercules at RAF Brize Norton with an FA delegation including FA Chief Exec David Davies, Gary Mabbutt, Lawrie McMenemy and the Premier League trophy #surreal. . . . The match was to take place in the Olympic Stadium, the same location that the Taliban had used for public executions. It was bullet riddled and the grass looked more like straw growing from a bed of dust. Tickets were a simple green stamp on a scrap of paper which were counterfeited in their hundreds. As the teams lined up on the pitch in a scene resembling the WWII movie Escape to Victory, 30,000 Afghan men and boys attempted to squeeze through the rudimentary gates. Men scaled the walls, lifting their sons up above their heads to avoid the crush. Police used the butts of their Kalashnikovs to keep the crowd at bay. I had to split myself in two to cover the match and also the potential disaster unravelling outside. . . . The crowd went crazy when Kabul scored early but ISAF went on to win 1:3. It would have been diplomatic I always thought, if somehow, the local side could have edged it, but it wasn’t to be. Not quite a pyrrhic victory, but certainly one short lived. . . . The following day I was able to arrange a local fixer to take me around and see ‘the sights’. The devastation of the city was off the scale. Very saddened to hear of the passing of one of the all time greatest press photographers Fleet Street has ever had. John Downing passed away peacefully early this morning. An inspiration to many; kind, passionate and generous, sharing his unlimited passion for photography. Alongside the numerous awards, honours and an MBE for services to journalism, he was one of the co-founders of The PPA in 1984 which went on to become The BPPA (British Press Photographers’ Association). Within weeks of starting photography as a hobby, I read how John was the only photographer to have his camera with him (A Sureshot I recall?) after a day’s work, when the IRA bombed the Conservative Party’s conference at Brighton’s Grand Hotel in 1984. As a result, I have always had a camera to hand. Reading how he was smuggled into Afghanistan in the early 80s, dressed in a burqa, was truly amazing. His photographs helped form a huge part of my education into powerful photojournalism, combining journalistic content with an aesthetic which drew the viewer in and spoke to the heart as well as the mind. If you’re not familiar with John’s work, I can’t recommend his book “Legacy” highly enough. Just Google it. Photographs: John Downing; Legacy.
