Emma didn't know how she had managed to grab him and swim away while holding him with his head above the water, with that blasted tail that at best confused her, and simultaneously focus on using her magic to heal his horrible wound. That he hadn't drowned, or that she hadn't had the bad luck to turn human before reaching shore, was the real miracle. It was especially difficult to keep healing him and checking he was breathing without completely leaving the water, at least part of her tail had to stay in or she'd feel terribly sick.
But she managed, out of stubbornness, and perhaps her extreme need not to let the man die, not when she could save him. Then, maybe, this horror that had befallen her would make a bit more sense. There’d be a reason for her suffering. He was breathing normally again, her hand still glowing with magic as she gently brushed his cheek, hovering over him as much as the water allowed. "Wake up..." she murmured, "Come on, you have to fight it too... Open your eyes..."
